Detention is NOT a Solution – Protest

Join us at 18:00 on Friday, 28 March, in front of the Safi Detention Centre in order to stand in solidarity with our detained brothers and sisters.

Vulnerable people are being detained for up to two years in degrading, unhygienic conditions without adequate access to legal aid or contact with the outside world.

Vulnerable people, women and children, LGBTQ+ individuals, migrants traumatised by shipwreck, and people with special needs should never be imprisoned.

We call on the authorities to:

  1. Release all vulnerable persons and children from detention immediately, including members of our LGBTQ+ community;
  2. Increase transparency at Safi and allow NGOs and legal counsels greater access;
  3. Halt the practice of detaining people for extended periods of time who pose no threat to the community;
  4. Expand the use of alternatives to detention that are already well-established in Malta;
  5. Halt the raids that target long-standing members of our community, whilst providing a pathway for those that remain undocumented to regularise their status.

We cannot abide and standby as the authorities imprison vulnerable members of our community for years on end in inhuman and degrading conditions without access to adequate legal aid.

We firmly believe that all people, not least children and vulnerable members of our communities, deserve liberty, the right to speedy due process and the right to a dignified existence.
