Women’s Day March – All Different, Same Struggle

The 8th of March is dedicated to the celebration of women’s achievements. It has been and will continue to be the day in which women from different cultures and backgrounds get together to fight for their rights. Moviment Graffitti and Women’s Rights Foundation are organising a Women’s Day March with the support of a number of organizations. The general theme of the March is ALL DIFFERENT, SAME STRUGGLE.

Women in Malta have achieved the right to vote, the right to own property, the right to work. Yet women continue to face injustice. Patriarchal structures are still deeply ingrained in our society. For all the empty talk of equality, women continue to be treated differently and unequally from men.

Malta continues to have low female representation in parliament and in decision-making positions. Gender pay-gap continues to widen even though women have access to the labour market. Women are still expected to be carers and sacrifice their time to deal with family needs, be it raising children, dealing with the household, looking after their elderly parents even – if they work full-time. And yet if a woman opts to pursue her career and achieve her ambition, she is still frowned upon because that’s not what women should do.

Our laws are still not fully compliant with ensuring that women have full independence and equal treatment at law.

In the last couple of years, the rate of femicide has increased, and women and girls continue to suffer some of the worst forms of violence whilst equally being blamed for exaggerating, lying and even that they had coming what they deserved.

From rich to poor, migrant, trans, lesbian, bi, differently abled, women’s experiences are different but their struggles remain the same.

Come join us this Sunday, 8th March at 3pm at Valletta City gate so that together, we will march against inequality and celebrate women’s diversity.

NGOs supporting the march: Aditus Foundation, Allied Rainbow Communities, Association for Equality, Doctors for Choice Malta, Integra Foundation, Isles of the left, LGBT+ Gozo, MGRM, Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations, Men against violence, Moviment Graffitti, SOS Malta, Women for women, Women’s Rights Foundation, YPB, Żminijietna Malta, Friends of the Earth Malta and Malta Sound Women Network.

Marċ f’Jum il-Mara – Ilkoll Differenti, Ġlieda Waħda

It-8 ta’ Marzu huwa ddedikat biex niċċelebraw il-kisbiet tal-mara. Kien u se jibqa’ dak il-jum fejn nisa li ġejjin minn kulturi u ċirkostanzi tal-ħajja differenti jingħaqdu flimkien sabiex jiġġieldu għad-drittijiet tagħhom. Moviment Graffitti u Women’s Rights Foundation qed jorganizzaw Marċ f’Jum il-Mara b’support minn diversi organizzazzjonijiet. It-tema ġenerali tal-marċ hi ILKOLL DIFFERENTI, ĠLIEDA WAĦDA.

In-nisa f’Malta kisbu d-dritt għall-vot, id-dritt biex ikunu sidien tal-proprjetà, id-dritt biex jaħdmu. Iżda madanakollu n-nisa għadhom qed iħabbtu wiċċhom mal-inġustizzji. L-għeruq tal-istruttura patrijarkali għadhom jinħassu sew fis-soċjetà tagħna. Minkejja l-ħafna kliem fieragħ li jingħad dwar l-ugwaljanza, in-nisa xorta għadhom qed jiġu ttrattati b’mod differenti u mhux ugwali għall-irġiel.

F’Malta għad għandna rata baxxa ħafna fejn tidħol ir-rappreżentanza femminili fil-Parlament u f’pożizzjonijiet ta’ teħid ta’ deċiżjonijiet. Id-differenza fil-pagi bejn is-sessi qed tkompli tikber minkejja l-fatt li n-nisa għandhom aċċess għas-suq tax-xogħol. In-nisa xorta għadhom jiġu mistennija li jaqdu l-irwol ta’ ‘carer’, u li jissaggrifikaw ħinhom biex jieħdu ħsieb il-bżonnijiet tal-familja, kemm jekk biex jieħdu ħsieb it-tfal, jagħmlu faċendi tad-dar, jew jieħdu ħsieb lill-ġenituri anzjani tagħhom, anke jekk ikollhom impjieg fuq bażi full-time. U jekk mara tagħżel li tkompli fil-karriera tagħha u tikseb l-ambizzjonijiet tagħha, xorta għadek issib min jikkundannaha u jesprimi xi forma ta’ diżapprovazzjoni għax ma tkunx qed issegwi n-normi li mistennija timxi magħhom il-mara.

Il-liġijiet tagħna xorta għadhom mhumiex konformi għal kollox ma’ mekkaniżmi biex jiġi żgurat li n-nisa jkunu jistgħu jgawdu minn awtonomija sħiħa u trattament ugwali quddiem il-liġi.

Fl-aħħar ftit snin, ir-rata ta’ femiċidju kompliet tikber u n-nisa u l-bniet qed ikomplu jsofru wħud mill-agħar forom ta’ vjolenza, filwaqt li fl-istess ħin jiġu mgħajra li qed jesaġeraw, qed jigdbu u li saħansitra li kienu qed ‘jistednuha’ u ħadu dak li ħaqqhom.

Minn nisa foqra għal sinjuri, immigranti, trans, lesbjani, bi, b’abbiltajiet differenti − l-esperjenzi tan-nisa jvarjaw iżda l-isfidi u t-taqbidiet li jaffaċċjaw jibqgħu l-istess.

Ejjew ingħaqdu magħna l-Ħadd li ġej, 8 ta’ Marzu fit-3pm f’Bieb il-Belt ħalli nimxu flimkien ilkoll b’għajta waħda għall-ugwaljanza u biex niċċelebraw id-diversità tan-nisa.

NGOs li qed jissupportjaw il-marċ: Aditus Foundation, Allied Rainbow Communities, Association for Equality, Doctors for Choice Malta, Integra Foundation, Isles of the left, LGBT+ Gozo, MGRM, Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations, Men against violence, Moviment Graffitti, SOS Malta, Women for women, Women’s Rights Foundation, YPB, Żminijietna Malta, Friends of the Earth Malta u Malta Sound Women Network.
