SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Teacher Who Promised the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of The Teacher Who Promised the Sea\, to remember the Second Spanish Republic. \nThe Teacher Who Promised the Sea (Spanish: El maestro que prometió el mar) is a 2023 Spanish historical drama film directed by Patricia Font. It tells the story of Catalan teacher Antoni Benaiges\, who in 1935 is sent to a small village in the province of Burgos\, where he introduces an innovative and inspiring teaching method. Antoni is a man who supports the revolutionary changes that the Second Republic was trying to implement in society. \nThe film also follows a present-day story: Ariadna\, who seeks to find out what happened to her great-grandfather\, who disappeared during the war. \nEl Día de la II República (Day of the Second Spanish Republic) takes place every year on the 14th of April. On that day in 1931\, following democratic elections and the abdication and exile of King Alfonso XIII\, the Second Republic was declared. \nIt was a democratic period. In just a few years\, significant social and economic changes were implemented\, such as granting women the right to vote\, improving the education system\, supporting cultural and scientific endeavours\, challenging the privileges of the Church\, and promoting a plurinational state\, among others. This period was abruptly interrupted by a coup d’état in 1936\, which triggered a three-year civil war\, leaving more than 500\,000 people dead and resulting in a fascist dictatorship that lasted 38 years. \nBefore the screening\, Kor ReSister and AMU (Antifascist Musical Union) will sing a few songs related to the Spanish Second Republic. \nFree entrance. Please note that there are stairs to access the venue.

SUMMARY:Antifascist Bingo\, Music\, and Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the occasion of Italian Liberation Day from Nazi-fascist occupation. \nWe will start at 5pm with two rounds of antifascist bingo. Through numbers\, we will remember historical antifascist and resistance facts. \nAfterwards\, the public is invited to listen or join the Kor Re-Sisters as they sing resistance songs. \nFrom 8pm\, we will share a vegetarian dinner together (more details to come). \nOn 25 April 1945\, the liberation of Italy from Nazi-fascist occupation was declared\, thanks to the resistance of various antifascist forces and the armed partisan movement. \nToday\, more than ever\, our world is being threatened again by the far-right and recent fascist movements. But\, as Chumbawamba sing\, “we’ll never rest again\, until every fascist dies!” \nThere is renewed hope in Italy after the younger generation stood together to vote no in the last referendum\, defending democracy\, justice\, and the antifascist constitution. \nSing along with us\, stay for our antifascist bingo and dinner! \nBingo and music are free. Please note that the venue is only accessible by stairs.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Salaryman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening and discussion on the pressing topic of work-life balance in modern society. \nBefore launching into a discussion we’ll start with a thought-provoking feature-length documentary by Costa Rican visual artist\, photographer and filmmaker Allegra Pacheco. The film explores the nature of work and its repercussions through Japan’s ‘Salaryman’\, a term used to describe white-collar men who dedicate their life to their jobs at high cost to their social life and physical and mental health. \nThis award winning documentary invites us to understand and rethink the ethics of our global working practices in a capitalist society. The titular salarymen and other peers – working mothers\, graduates\, and female office workers facing discrimination – guide us through a journey from conformity and despair to hope for change. \nMost poignantly\, we catch a glimpse of how victims of Japan’s tragic ‘karōshi’ (“death from overwork”) phenomenon spurred landmark legislation to limit working hours\, and how the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of remote and flexible working\, though deep-rooted cultural pressures mean overwork remains a persistent challenge. \nTrigger warning: among other themes\, this documentary explores the topic of self-harm in the context of overwork. \nKindly note that access to the screening venue is via a flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:NAKBA 78 - March for the return of stolen lands
DESCRIPTION:On the 15th of May 1948\, the Israeli State was created. For several months before this date\, Zionist militias began attacking\, killing\, and expelling Palestinians from their land. Israel seized nearly 70% of historic Palestine\, killed thousands of Palestinians\, and expelled 750\,000 Palestinians from their homes. These people and their descendants still live till today as refugees. \nThis is the story of the Nakba – the Palestinian catastrophe carried out by the Zionist colonialism. \nOn the 16th May we will gather at 4:30pm in Gżira to commemorate the Nakba\, condemn the illegal occupation\, genocide\, and raise our voices for a FREE PALESTINE: NAKBA 78 – March for the return of stolen lands \nThe Nakba is not a past event. The Nakba continues everyday through military occupation\, resource theft\, apartheid policies\, sieges\, mass imprisonment\, and ongoing genocide. \nOver the past two years and a half\, Israel has massacred more than 72\,000 Palestinians in the open-air prison of Gaza through bombing and starvation. For the past two years and half we witnessed Israel committing genocide in Gaza. Despite the ceasefire agreement Israel is still attacking and killing Palestinians in Gaza whilst blocking humanitarian aid. \nIsrael has been expanding its borders and seizing more lands from Lebanon\, Gaza and the West Bank with Israeli officials describing this territory they seized as “buffer zones.” In Gaza\, more than half of the Strip’s territory” is under Israeli control. The yellow line introduced by Israel in the south of Lebanon had placed around 16 percent of Lebanon’s total area under its control. \nIn addition\, Israeli military forces are illegally abducting more and more Palestinian people holding them under terrible conditions. Over 20\,000 Palestinians have been held in these terrifying conditions since October 2023. In this period\, at least 110 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody. Currently\, the Israel Prison Service (IPS) is holding 9\,900 Palestinians – approximately 3\,532 detainees held without charge and about 350 children. \nIsrael has burned alive thousands of children taking shelter in refugee camps and hospitals\, and has destroyed everything – homes\, schools\, health centers. It has cold-bloodedly killed thousands of doctors\, nurses\, journalists\, and workers. \nSee you on Saturday\, 16 May\, as we remember the horrors of Zionism and continue the fight for a FREE PALESTINE

A vast stretch of public\, untouched land in the Gabriel Henin Street area is expected to be handed over to three football clubs for the construction of a sports complex: \nTwo full-size football pitches\, one of which will accommodate over 2\,000 spectators\, along with numerous other facilities. These venues will be available for mass events\, such as concerts\, and not just for sports.Land granted for sporting purposes can also host commercial facilities — ranging from hotels and retirement homes to shopping malls and restaurants. \nJoin us on Saturday\, May 23rd\, at 11:00am – in Gabriel Henin Street – for a press conference by the residents. \nA massive development of this nature\, right next to residents’ homes\, on virgin land\, and adjacent to a Natura 2000 site\, will have devastating effects\, including: \nIntense light and noise pollutionMajor traffic congestion when entering and exiting PembrokeThe destruction of natural landThe ruin of our quality of life and the enjoyment of our homes \nPembroke is already under siege from monstrous developments. Pembroke is set to become another Paceville. Pembroke can take no more. \nSports facilities can be built in alternative areas: without destroying nature\, and without wreaking havoc on the residents’ quality of life. \nSee you there!
