SUMMARY:Genocide in the Mediterranean - Gaza Beach Symbolic Action
DESCRIPTION:Not too far away from us\, on the coast of the Mediterranean\, a genocide is currently unfolding before our eyes. Like Malta\, Gaza has sandy beaches\, with the difference that on them and around them\, a genocide is being perpetrated by Israel on the Palestinians. \nOn Saturday 3rd February at 3pm\, we will be gathering at Għadira Bay in a symbolic action against the genocide in Gaza\, where we will call for action by Malta and the rest of the world so that Israel ends its atrocities against the Palestinian people. \nThe International Court of Justice (ICJ) has just rejected Israel’s request to stop hearing the accusations of genocide against it. The Court also recognised the alarming nature of the actions and statements by Israel’s leaders\, ordering Israel to stop killing the Palestinians and to end its siege on Gaza. \nHowever\, Israel had already stated that it would not be abiding by the decisions of the international courts. \nThe genocide of the Palestinians is still ongoing\, and it will not stop as long as Israel continues to receive support from the United States and Europe. \nWe invite you to join us on Saturday\, so that we continue to show our solidarity with the Palestinians in such a tragic moment in recent history. \n FREE PALESTINE  \n******* \nĠENOĊIDJU FIL-MEDITERRAN – AZZJONI SIMBOLIKA ‘BAJJA TA’ GAŻA’ \nFtit ‘il bogħod minna\, fil-Mediterran\, għaddej ġenoċidju. DESCRIPTION:Join us for another edition of Ċine-Palestina where we will be screening the film 3000 Nights (2015)\, dir. Mai Masri. \nAs part of our lead up for Women’s Day 2024 we are raising awareness on the conditions of Palestinian women within the Israeli occupation’s prison system. The film follows our protagonist\, Layal\, a Palestinian school teacher hailing from Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Layal and her husband are prepared to make their way to Canada\, when Layal is apprehended by the Israeli military at a checkpoint. The film follows the events following her arrest and sentencing. \nEntrance is free\, and snacks and drinks will be available. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Women's Day - Tote Bags Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of creativity as part of our events around this year’s Women’s Day. \nYou can bring an old tote bag and transform it into a feminist one with fabric markers and paints\, or even stick/sew a piece of material on top of unwanted adverts/words on your tote bag. Francesca Zammit from YPB will bring her sewing machine to help us out with creativity. You may also bring an old T-shirt/other fabric and we will transform them into a tote bag during the workshop. \nWe will also have some ready-made tote bags waiting to be transformed into creative and colourful pieces of feminist art. \nThe workshop will last about 2 hours. Throughout it we will also be able to chat\, have a drink and chill. \nThis is a safe space activity: women\, non-binary & trans people\, queers and allies are welcome. We have a right to ask people to leave if they are making others feel unsafe.

This day is about remembering their struggles and achievements\, while being aware of what there is still to be done for us to be able live in a society where all people can collaborate together to overcome gender stereotypes\, gender-based violence\, femicide\, rape culture\, unfair sharing of parenting and housework\, male privilege in many spheres of daily life\, sexism and sexist language\, wage gaps\, inadequate reproductive services and rights\, and the list is endless. \nWomen\, non-binary and trans people all around the world still feel deeply passionate about this symbolic day\, as well as all allies in the struggle for a society free from patriarchal domination. Hence this year we have chosen the title United for Collective Liberation to underline the need to join forces for change. We are also looking for a change that will liberate women from oppression and injustice. Small amendments and improvements towards justice are essential but our aim is to see a much more radical\, global change in relationships and institutions. \nWe will be marching with anger and frustration\, remembering all the sisters we have lost in the past years and their families that are still waiting for justice. We believe it is important to name Sion\, Bernice\, Paulina and the last woman who was killed by the hands of someone who was supposed to love her\, Sandra Ramirez. \nJoin us on Friday\, 8th March at 5.30 pm near the Triton Fountain in Floriana where we will start our protest march. \nCome and bring other women\, non-binary friends and allies. Come with placards voicing your anger\, demanding justice\, dreaming of a feminist liberation.

Dan il-proġett mostruż ħa jipperikola wkoll il-banjijiet Rumani li jinsabu taħt iż-żona\, fejn qed tiġi proposta triq ġdida biex takkomoda l-ammont kbir ta’ appartamenti li ser joħloq dan il-proġett. \nIr-residenti tax-Xemxija diġà qegħdin jaffaċċjaw il-bini ta’ ’l fuq minn 700 appartament fuq is-sit ta’ fejn qabel kien hemm il-Mistra Village\, ftit metri biss ’il bogħod minn dan it-torri propost ta’ 13-il sular. A 13-storey tower (PA/00865/24) is proposed on protected garigue and very close to established cart ruts\, with this monster development also endangering the Roman Baths that are found right below the area in question\, where a new road is proposed in order to deal with the massive influx of apartments. \nXemxija residents are already facing the construction of another 700-plus apartments on the site of the former Mistra Village\, metres away from the proposed 13-storey tower. If the new tower proposal were to go through\, over 1000 apartments would be built at the same time on the same road in this very small town. \nTherefore\, we urge the Planning Authority to refuse this application as it stands. Another monster development would continue to add copious amounts of noise\, dust\, traffic\, and stress to the residents of the area. \nWe also urge the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage to take a stand against this application which\, if approved\, will ruin the context of the cart ruts of the area\, as well as posing a danger to the Roman Baths just under this proposed development. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of 20 Days in Mariupol\, as a reminder of the ongoing war that Russia is waging against Ukraine. \n\nThe 24th of February 2024 marked 2 years from the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 20 Days in Mariupol is a documentary which follows Ukrainian Associated Press (AP) journalists who become trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol\, in the South of Ukraine\, at the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion. \nIn late February and early March 2022\, these journalists struggle to continue their work documenting atrocities of the Russian invasion. The last international journalists remaining in the city as Russian forces close in\, they capture what become some of the most defining images of the war: dying children\, mass graves\, the bombing of a maternity hospital\, and more. \n20 Days in Mariupol recently won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. The director dedicated the victory to Ukrainians. Mariupol and other parts of Eastern and Southern Ukraine remain Russian-occupied. Russia also regularly bombs Ukrainian cities\, towns\, and villages\, deliberately attacking and killing civilians. But Ukraine continues to fight for freedom and liberation from Russian destruction\, occupation\, and invasion. \nThis documentary contains graphic images of war that may be disturbing to view. \n\nEntrance is free\, and drinks and snacks will be available at our bar.

DESCRIPTION:This Saturday 6th April at 11am\, we will be joining the Valletta residents in front of Parliament to protest against the current state of Valletta. \nThe occupation of public spaces in Valletta by tables\, chairs and other structures placed on public land by catering outlets has now exceeded all limits. \nDespite there being clear policies that are meant to regulate the operation of outdoor catering areas\, enforcement is largely non-existent. The authorities concerned\, namely the Lands Authority\, the Planning Authority and the MTA are clearly not fit for the job. \nDue to the impunity that reigns in this sector\, the owners of catering establishments are running roughshod over the right of residents to public accessibility and a decent quality of life. The Valletta residents are having to bear to brunt of the unbridled commercialisation of their public spaces. \nAs the Office of the Ombudsman stressed\, the situation is so desperate that emergency vehicles such as ambulances are finding carriageways blocked as they have to squeeze past tables and chairs to get to people in distress. All these illegalities and abuses are making the life of Valletta residents very difficult. \nResidents from other localities who are also facing the same problems\, including Sliema\, Buġibba\, Marsaskala and Mellieħa\, will be joining us for this protest organised by the Valletta residents. \nOur capital city\, which is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site\, is an integral part of our collective cultural heritage and must be protected. SUMMARY:Screening of 'Land and Freedom' in occasion of Dia de la II República
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of Land and Freedom (Tierra y Libertad) on the occasion of the Spanish Dia of II República. \nLand and Freedom is a 1995 film directed by Ken Loach and written by Jim Allen. It narrates the story of a British communist unemployed worker who decides to join the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans were a coalition of democratic parties and ideologies including communists\, socialists and anarchists\, against a fascist coup d’état of Spanish militaries supported by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. \nEl Dia de la II República\, Day of the Second Spanish Republic\, takes place yearly on the 14th of April. On that day in 1931\, following democratic elections and the abdication and exile of King Alphonso XIII\, the Second Republic was declared. \nIt was a democratic period with various progressive and conservative governments that achieved significant advancements such as granting women the right to vote\, implementing major educational initiatives\, supporting cultural and scientific endeavours\, challenging the privileges of the Church\, and promoting a plurinational state among others. This period was suddenly interrupted by a coup d’état in 1936\, which initiated a three-year civil war leaving more than 500.000 people dead and resulting in a fascist dictatorship that lasted 38 years. \nEntrance is free\, and drinks and nibbles will be available.

On April 25th\, Italy commemorates the fall of the nazi-fascist regime and the victory of partisan groups that had waged an armed struggle against it. \nThe victory of anti-fascist freedom fighters became a potent symbol that inspired generations of Italians and beyond. \nThe event will start at 6pm with drinks and Italian resistance songs. \nAt 7:30pm\, we will screen the movie ‘The Seven Cervi Brothers’ (1968) directed by Gianni Puccini with the assistance of Gianni Amelio (language: Italian with English subtitles). The movie is based on the true story of seven brothers and their family who\, in the context of both economic exploitation as well as the Second World War\, become anti-fascists and join the partisan movement. \nEntrance is free.

Tables and chairs placed by catering establishments have clogged up our pavements\, streets\, squares\, and even our coast\, trampling over our basic right to safe and unobstructed public access. \nThe so-called balance that the authorities always emphasise is evidently not being achieved\, and the dire consequences of this are being felt by the residents of localities besieged by commercial interests. Enforcement is non-existent\, and the authorities responsible for this mess\, namely the Planning Authority\, the Lands Authority\, and the Malta Tourism Authority\, are refusing to protect our interests\, allowing the abuse of public land to go on unimpeded instead. We believe that the time has come to seriously address this state of affairs. \nOn Saturday 27th April we invite you to join us for a press conference that will launch the Il-Bankini taċ-Ċittadini campaign. The economic growth of the past years should have improved the quality of life of workers. Instead\, we are in a situation where many workers have to make do with low wages\, work precariously\, and in bad conditions. We believe that we should shift to an economic model based on social justice. \nOn Wednesday 1st May we invite you to a press conference which will launch the campaign Justice for Workers. We will be meeting near the Manwel Dimech monument in Castille Square\, Valletta. \nDuring the press conference\, organised by Moviment Graffitti together with several other organisations\, we will present the document we have written\, outlining how we can shift towards an economic system based on social justice. We will be listing a number of problems in the Maltese economic system and the injustices that a wide range of workers have to face because of them. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 15 May we’ll meet at 6.30pm in Independence Gardens\, Sliema\, to remember the Nakba and denounce the genocide in Gaza. We’ll walk to Exiles bay (under the St. Julian’s Tower) where\, starting from 7.30pm\, there will be a symbolic event and open mic in solidarity with Palestine. \nIn the years and months leading to the 15th May of 1948 — the day the state of Israel was established — Zionist militias designed a plan for killing and expelling hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their lands so that they could declare a state of Israel with the maximum amount of land and the minimum amount of Palestinians in it. \nMore than 750\,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their cities\, villages and fields. Thousands of Palestinians were murdered and buried in mass graves\, while the terrorized others were forced to flee to Arab countries\, the West Bank and Gaza. \nIsraeli cities rose on the ruins of the Palestinian cities and villages\, while millions of Palestinians were born in refugee camps\, denied their right to return to their lands and homes. \nTo Palestinians\, this is known as the Nakba — the Catastrophe. \nA catastrophe that has been ongoing since then. Palestinians continued experiencing the occupation of the little land they had left\, imprisonment\, apartheid\, theft of their resources\, illegal blockades and\, now\, genocide. \nWith the full support of many Western countries\, Israel has butchered over 35\,000 Palestinians in Gaza\, for the most part women and children\, and razed to the ground Gaza’s infrastructure\, including schools\, hospitals and refugee camps. \nHowever\, in the face of all adversity\, Palestinians continue to resist. \nWe will not forget the Nakba\, we will not forget Gaza and we will not forget the Palestinians. \nIn these deeply painful times\, solidarity is needed more than ever. GEORGE’S SQUARE \nSt. George’s Square in Rabat\, Gozo is completely taken over by tables and chairs put outside by catering establishments. The square has become totally occupied by catering furniture to the point that not only public access is being obstructed\, but even occasions such as weddings and funerals are being hindered. In the words of the Archpriest of the Basilica of St.George\, “the situation has now reached the brink”. \nOn Saturday\, June 15 at 11am\, we will be joining Archpriest Joseph Curmi\, Soċjetà Filarmonika La Stella and Il-Ħaġar museum to give a Press Conference in St. George’s Square about this situation. The NGOs Għawdix\, Din l-Art Ħelwa – Għawdex and Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA)\, together with groups of residents from other affected localities\, will also be participating. \nSt. George’s Square belongs to everyone\, and no one has the right to grab public land and do whatever they like with it. The pedestrianisation of the square was meant for the people’s enjoyment of the square\, and not for the square to end up being exploited by the greed of some. It is evident that the balance between commercial interests and community interests is not being met. Not only is it not being met\, but it is clear that only the interests of those who abuse public space are being considered. \nDespite the various attempts at dialogue and compromise\, the responsible authorities\, namely the Lands Authority\, the Planning Authority\, and the Maltese Tourism Authority\, continue to shirk their responsibility and let abuse reign free in the square. \nThe lack of action and enforcement on the part of the responsible authorities is only incentivising further abuse. Currently\, the four entrances to the square are all blocked. The situation is so grave that anyone who needs to hold a wedding or a funeral is having to plead with the authorities and restaurant owners to move the tables and chairs. This is not acceptable. \nWe encourage the people of Gozo to join us for this Press Conference to demand that St. George’s Square is given back to the people. \nThis Press Conference forms part of our campaign ‘Il-Bankini taċ-Ċittadini’. DESCRIPTION:WEALTH INEQUALITY IN MALTA \nJoin us on Thursday 27th of June for a discussion on Wealth Inequality in Malta. \nA panel will be approaching the subject from the economic\, social and workers’ union perspectives and will be made up of Andre Callus (Moviment Graffitti activist)\, Matthew Attard (Solidarjetà union) and Josephine Mallia (lecturer at the Junior College). Journalist Julian Delia will be moderating the discussion. \nWe encourage you to attend this discussion which forms part of our campaign Justice for Workers (Ġustizzja mal-Ħaddiema) which was launched on Workers’ Day earlier this year. The campaign is focusing on bringing back and safeguarding the rights and dignity of workers in Malta and Gozo and working towards a better quality of life for all. DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in attending\, please complete this registration form here: https://shorturl.at/fTK1S \nAlthough no precise statistics exist\, it is estimated that a few hundred stateless individuals reside in Malta\, lacking the rights and privileges of any nationality. A significant proportion of these individuals are children\, some born in Malta to stateless parents\, some born at sea\, and others born in war zones during their parents’ journeys to safety. \nStateless children born in Malta are as Maltese as any other child; they speak our language\, attend our schools\, participate in local clubs and teams\, and are active in our communities. However\, despite being stateless through no fault of their own\, they face systemic discrimination\, disenfranchisement\, and the prospect of never legally belonging anywhere. \nMalti ta’ Malta: A Conference on the Lived Experiences of Stateless Children in Malta will explore the profound impacts of denying citizenship to children in Malta and propose potential policy solutions to address this injustice. The panel discussion will highlight the voices of stateless Maltese children and include an analysis of the relevant legal framework and current policies surrounding enforced statelessness.
