SUMMARY:Migrant Children in Malta - Documentary screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us this evening for the screening of 4 short documentaries and a community discussion on migrant children. To celebrate World Children’s Day\, we will come together to talk about children’s rights\, specifically those who are migrants\, refugees\, without citizenship and/or stateless. \nWe will be showing 4 short documentaries on migrant children. \n– ‘A Life On Hold’ follows Somali refugee Omar\, who was forced to leave Somalia at 13 years old because of war.\n– ‘The House is not There’ is an animated video about Henry\, who was a child soldier in El Salvador.\n– Finally\, two Minsija videos\, a collaboration between MaltaToday\, MCAST and Moviment Graffitti\, tell the stories of Alex who was born in Sudan and fled to Malta at the age of 7 and 17-year-old Joseph who was born in Malta but is still stateless. \nMillions of people worldwide are stateless\, and many among them are children. This means they are not recognised by any country\, they are not provided with birth certificates\, and they are denied access to education\, legal employment\, health\, etc. According to 2023 numbers\, over 170 people in Malta are stateless and half of them are children. \nThis evening we will have a community discussion that we hope will help in pressuring the Maltese government to take action and enforce the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, and international law\, and take measures that allow migrant children to live a dignified life.

DESCRIPTION:25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Moviment Graffitti\, together with Young Progressive Beings\, is organising a protest march and action as a form of resistance to the culture of violence that characterises our patriarchal society. \nA culture of violence is one which normalises\, justifies and therefore creates a context where violence can flourish in all its forms. Violence against women can be domestic\, physical\, sexual\, social\, moral\, psychological\, economic\, political\, religious\, financial you name it\, women have been subjected to it. We live in a society where violence against women is often concealed behind jokes\, unwanted comments full of sexual connotations (often disguised as compliments)\, and other stereotyped behaviour. \n\nOn Sunday 26th November\, we will be meeting near the Triton Fountain at 11.00 a.m. to march in protest against this culture of violence and to empower women to resist violence in all its forms. Join us. Be part of the fight against gender-based violence\, which affects mostly women. You can bring your own placards or use ours.

DESCRIPTION:To mark this year’s World AIDS Day\, Moviment Graffitti\, MGRM (HIV Malta) and Checkpoint Malta are jointly organising a community discussion about HIV. \nMalta has the highest rate of HIV diagnosis in the EU at 15.9 per 100\,000 population according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC\, 2022). Over the past decade\, the rate of HIV diagnosis has more than doubled. Yet\, this topic is hardly discussed on a social level. There is still a lot of secrecy and stigma surrounding HIV especially in the wider society. \nWe would like to invite you to participate in this intimate conversation on the subject on Friday 1st December between 6.00 and 8.00 p.m. at Maori\, Valletta. DESCRIPTION:Released just 10 months before her demise\, Nothing Compares is not just a documentary that highlights the artistic talent of Sinnead O’ Connor\, but how she was also consistently vociferous when it came to women’s rights and human rights in general\, her bold stance against the war and her political stand and comments about the Catholic church at the time. A person also described as being ‘ahead of her time’\, the artist was a beacon of truth in a harsh music industry that did and does still impose beauty and behavioural standards on female artists. \nThis documentary is a powerful movie\, with recounts narrated by Sinnead herself\, and those who worked with and/or knew her closely. \nWe shall be showing it at our premises in Valletta on 5th December at 6:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Not too far away from us\, on the coast of the Mediterranean\, a genocide is currently unfolding before our eyes. Like Malta\, Gaza has sandy beaches\, with the difference that on them and around them\, a genocide is being perpetrated by Israel on the Palestinians. \nOn Saturday 3rd February at 3pm\, we will be gathering at Għadira Bay in a symbolic action against the genocide in Gaza\, where we will call for action by Malta and the rest of the world so that Israel ends its atrocities against the Palestinian people. \nThe International Court of Justice (ICJ) has just rejected Israel’s request to stop hearing the accusations of genocide against it. The film follows our protagonist\, Layal\, a Palestinian school teacher hailing from Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Layal and her husband are prepared to make their way to Canada\, when Layal is apprehended by the Israeli military at a checkpoint. The film follows the events following her arrest and sentencing. \nEntrance is free\, and snacks and drinks will be available. We hope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of creativity as part of our events around this year’s Women’s Day. \nYou can bring an old tote bag and transform it into a feminist one with fabric markers and paints\, or even stick/sew a piece of material on top of unwanted adverts/words on your tote bag. Francesca Zammit from YPB will bring her sewing machine to help us out with creativity. You may also bring an old T-shirt/other fabric and we will transform them into a tote bag during the workshop. \nWe will also have some ready-made tote bags waiting to be transformed into creative and colourful pieces of feminist art. \nThe workshop will last about 2 hours. Throughout it we will also be able to chat\, have a drink and chill. \nThis is a safe space activity: women\, non-binary & trans people\, queers and allies are welcome. We have a right to ask people to leave if they are making others feel unsafe.

This day is about remembering their struggles and achievements\, while being aware of what there is still to be done for us to be able live in a society where all people can collaborate together to overcome gender stereotypes\, gender-based violence\, femicide\, rape culture\, unfair sharing of parenting and housework\, male privilege in many spheres of daily life\, sexism and sexist language\, wage gaps\, inadequate reproductive services and rights\, and the list is endless. \nWomen\, non-binary and trans people all around the world still feel deeply passionate about this symbolic day\, as well as all allies in the struggle for a society free from patriarchal domination. Hence this year we have chosen the title United for Collective Liberation to underline the need to join forces for change. We are also looking for a change that will liberate women from oppression and injustice. Small amendments and improvements towards justice are essential but our aim is to see a much more radical\, global change in relationships and institutions. \nWe will be marching with anger and frustration\, remembering all the sisters we have lost in the past years and their families that are still waiting for justice. A 13-storey tower (PA/00865/24) is proposed on protected garigue and very close to established cart ruts\, with this monster development also endangering the Roman Baths that are found right below the area in question\, where a new road is proposed in order to deal with the massive influx of apartments. \nXemxija residents are already facing the construction of another 700-plus apartments on the site of the former Mistra Village\, metres away from the proposed 13-storey tower. If the new tower proposal were to go through\, over 1000 apartments would be built at the same time on the same road in this very small town. \nTherefore\, we urge the Planning Authority to refuse this application as it stands. Another monster development would continue to add copious amounts of noise\, dust\, traffic\, and stress to the residents of the area. \nWe also urge the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage to take a stand against this application which\, if approved\, will ruin the context of the cart ruts of the area\, as well as posing a danger to the Roman Baths just under this proposed development. The extensive works proposed will put this valuable site at major risk. \nFinally\, we also urge the Government to protect the land for the common benefit of residents and ensure public access\, preserving the cultural and natural heritage for generations to come\, and preserving the open space there already is. \nWe ask the residents of Xemxija and the general public to join us at this Press Conference (see location: https://shorturl.at/AKT58) to voice our many concerns and to make it clear that this proposal should be refused outright to safeguard the interests of the residents and our cultural heritage.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of 20 Days in Mariupol\, as a reminder of the ongoing war that Russia is waging against Ukraine. \n\nThe 24th of February 2024 marked 2 years from the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 20 Days in Mariupol is a documentary which follows Ukrainian Associated Press (AP) journalists who become trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol\, in the South of Ukraine\, at the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion. \nIn late February and early March 2022\, these journalists struggle to continue their work documenting atrocities of the Russian invasion. The last international journalists remaining in the city as Russian forces close in\, they capture what become some of the most defining images of the war: dying children\, mass graves\, the bombing of a maternity hospital\, and more. \n20 Days in Mariupol recently won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. The director dedicated the victory to Ukrainians. Mariupol and other parts of Eastern and Southern Ukraine remain Russian-occupied. Russia also regularly bombs Ukrainian cities\, towns\, and villages\, deliberately attacking and killing civilians. But Ukraine continues to fight for freedom and liberation from Russian destruction\, occupation\, and invasion. \nThis documentary contains graphic images of war that may be disturbing to view. \n\nEntrance is free\, and drinks and snacks will be available at our bar.

DESCRIPTION:This Saturday 6th April at 11am\, we will be joining the Valletta residents in front of Parliament to protest against the current state of Valletta. \nThe occupation of public spaces in Valletta by tables\, chairs and other structures placed on public land by catering outlets has now exceeded all limits. \nDespite there being clear policies that are meant to regulate the operation of outdoor catering areas\, enforcement is largely non-existent. The authorities concerned\, namely the Lands Authority\, the Planning Authority and the MTA are clearly not fit for the job. \nDue to the impunity that reigns in this sector\, the owners of catering establishments are running roughshod over the right of residents to public accessibility and a decent quality of life. The Valletta residents are having to bear to brunt of the unbridled commercialisation of their public spaces. \nAs the Office of the Ombudsman stressed\, the situation is so desperate that emergency vehicles such as ambulances are finding carriageways blocked as they have to squeeze past tables and chairs to get to people in distress. All these illegalities and abuses are making the life of Valletta residents very difficult. \nResidents from other localities who are also facing the same problems\, including Sliema\, Buġibba\, Marsaskala and Mellieħa\, will be joining us for this protest organised by the Valletta residents. \nOur capital city\, which is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site\, is an integral part of our collective cultural heritage and must be protected. SUMMARY:Screening of 'Land and Freedom' in occasion of Dia de la II República
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of Land and Freedom (Tierra y Libertad) on the occasion of the Spanish Dia of II República. \nLand and Freedom is a 1995 film directed by Ken Loach and written by Jim Allen. It narrates the story of a British communist unemployed worker who decides to join the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans were a coalition of democratic parties and ideologies including communists\, socialists and anarchists\, against a fascist coup d’état of Spanish militaries supported by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. \nEl Dia de la II República\, Day of the Second Spanish Republic\, takes place yearly on the 14th of April. On that day in 1931\, following democratic elections and the abdication and exile of King Alphonso XIII\, the Second Republic was declared. \nIt was a democratic period with various progressive and conservative governments that achieved significant advancements such as granting women the right to vote\, implementing major educational initiatives\, supporting cultural and scientific endeavours\, challenging the privileges of the Church\, and promoting a plurinational state among others. This period was suddenly interrupted by a coup d’état in 1936\, which initiated a three-year civil war leaving more than 500.000 people dead and resulting in a fascist dictatorship that lasted 38 years. \nEntrance is free\, and drinks and nibbles will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Italian Liberation Day to remember the resistance against nazi-fascism and celebrate the spirit of anti-fascism. On April 25th\, Italy commemorates the fall of the nazi-fascist regime and the victory of partisan groups that had waged an armed struggle against it. \nThe victory of anti-fascist freedom fighters became a potent symbol that inspired generations of Italians and beyond. \nThe event will start at 6pm with drinks and Italian resistance songs. \nAt 7:30pm\, we will screen the movie ‘The Seven Cervi Brothers’ (1968) directed by Gianni Puccini with the assistance of Gianni Amelio (language: Italian with English subtitles). The movie is based on the true story of seven brothers and their family who\, in the context of both economic exploitation as well as the Second World War\, become anti-fascists and join the partisan movement. \nEntrance is free.

Tables and chairs placed by catering establishments have clogged up our pavements\, streets\, squares\, and even our coast\, trampling over our basic right to safe and unobstructed public access. \nThe so-called balance that the authorities always emphasise is evidently not being achieved\, and the dire consequences of this are being felt by the residents of localities besieged by commercial interests. Enforcement is non-existent\, and the authorities responsible for this mess\, namely the Planning Authority\, the Lands Authority\, and the Malta Tourism Authority\, are refusing to protect our interests\, allowing the abuse of public land to go on unimpeded instead. We believe that the time has come to seriously address this state of affairs. \nOn Saturday 27th April we invite you to join us for a press conference that will launch the Il-Bankini taċ-Ċittadini campaign. We shall be meeting in Merchants Street (next to MUŻA) at 10.30am. \nDifferent resident groups hailing from several localities\, among which Valletta\, Tas-Sliema\, Marsaskala\, Buġibba and Mellieħa\, will be joining us for this press conference. Together with them we have prepared a document with several demands meant to provide solutions to the problems brought about by the encroachment on public spaces. The economic growth of the past years should have improved the quality of life of workers. Instead\, we are in a situation where many workers have to make do with low wages\, work precariously\, and in bad conditions. We believe that we should shift to an economic model based on social justice. \nOn Wednesday 1st May we invite you to a press conference which will launch the campaign Justice for Workers. We will be meeting near the Manwel Dimech monument in Castille Square\, Valletta. \nDuring the press conference\, organised by Moviment Graffitti together with several other organisations\, we will present the document we have written\, outlining how we can shift towards an economic system based on social justice. We will be listing a number of problems in the Maltese economic system and the injustices that a wide range of workers have to face because of them. We believe that there are solutions and changes that should be implemented without delay in order to destroy this economic system based on precarity\, environmental destruction\, low wages and worker exploitation which only benefits the few. \nWe encourage you to spread the word with other workers who are facing similar challenges.
