SUMMARY:Documentary Screening - The Janes
DESCRIPTION: For the occasion of International Safe Abortion Day\, join us for a screening of ‘The Janes’ followed by brief talks and a group discussion! \n The 2022 documentary tells the true story of members of the Jane Collective\, a group of women who performed abortions in the US from 1968 until abortion was legalised in 1973 through Roe v. Wade. The documentary features interviews with several members of the collective. (Roe v. Wade was in effect until 2022\, when it was overturned). \n After the screening\, we will turn our attention to the local context. \n We will first have 2 brief talks by Prof Isabel Stabile and Dr Natalie Psaila from Doctors for Choice\, who will talk about the local Family Planning Advisory Service (FPAS Malta)\, which provides information on reproductive health\, and the Abortion Doula Support Service\, which provides information and support specifically on abortion. Next\, Liza Caruana-Finkel\, a helpline volunteer with Abortion Support Network\, will talk about the organisation’s work in helping people across Europe (including Malta) access abortions through information and financial assistance. \n Afterwards\, we will open up to a group discussion on abortion in relation to Malta. The march will start at 4pm\, so please arrive before then. After walking through Valletta\, we will gather in front of the law courts. There\, we will have speeches\, performances\, merchandise\, and more! \n This year’s theme is ‘abortion stigma.’ \n Each year\, hundreds of people in Malta have abortions. In fact\, we all know and love people who have had abortions. Abortion is common. Abortion is normal. \n But abortion is also criminalised. Just a few months ago\, a woman was prosecuted for having an abortion in Malta. Reported to the police by her abusive partner\, the State helped perpetuate the cycle of violence. \n People who have abortions should not be judged or criminalised. All residents of Malta deserve to be treated with respect and to have the autonomy to decide what is best for ourselves\, our bodies\, our lives. \n The Voice for Choice coalition\, made up of 14 organisations and groups\, will continue to fight until abortion is decriminalised\, normalised\, destigmatised\, and made available and accessible locally. \nJoin us!

SUMMARY:End the Genocide in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Palestinians in Gaza are being massacred by Israel with the complicity of Europe. Continuous bombardments\, including the bombardment of a school and a hospital\, led to thousands of children\, women and men to be brutally killed. And Gaza is also dying of thirst\, hunger and desperation after Israel stopped the supply of water\, food and fuel. \nOn Saturday we are meeting in front of Parliament in Valletta\, where we will lie on the ground in solidarity with the people of Gaza\, the victims of a cruel oppression that we cannot even start to imagine. \nGaza is a strip of land the size of Malta\, turned into a prison by Israel in 2007. Around two and a half million Palestinians live on this piece of land\, most of them refugees forcibly displaced from their land in 1948 with the creation of the Israeli state. \nFor 75 years\, Israel has been forcing Palestinians out of their homes while implementing an apartheid system. And in these last two corners that they have left – Gaza and the West Bank – Israel has continued to colonise Palestinians and to keep them under siege. \nBut now Israel has moved on to the next phase: Genocide. \nThere has never been a time when international solidarity with the Palestinian people was needed as much as it is today. DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, women in Malta could vote for the first time. \nMaltese women did not take to the streets to fight for the vote but it was still a huge struggle\, fought in the corridors of power and on the media\, until their right as equal citizens was recognised by a male dominated political system. Such important events of her-story are often neglected and perhaps not given the importance they deserve. \nToday\, 76 years later\, women’s political representation in Malta still remains relatively low. Women have still not managed to make significant inroads in the local political sphere. We will be discussing the part of her-story related to women’s suffrage in Malta with Professor Carmen Sammut who has published research in this area. \nProfessor Sammut will give a short presentation on the topic followed by a community discussion. \nWe invite you to join us for a glass of wine and to participate in the conversation on Monday\, 23rd October at 6.30 p.m. \nEntrance is free.

DESCRIPTION:Join us this evening for the screening of 4 short documentaries and a community discussion on migrant children. To celebrate World Children’s Day\, we will come together to talk about children’s rights\, specifically those who are migrants\, refugees\, without citizenship and/or stateless. \nWe will be showing 4 short documentaries on migrant children. \n– ‘A Life On Hold’ follows Somali refugee Omar\, who was forced to leave Somalia at 13 years old because of war.\n– ‘The House is not There’ is an animated video about Henry\, who was a child soldier in El Salvador.\n– Finally\, two Minsija videos\, a collaboration between MaltaToday\, MCAST and Moviment Graffitti\, tell the stories of Alex who was born in Sudan and fled to Malta at the age of 7 and 17-year-old Joseph who was born in Malta but is still stateless. \nMillions of people worldwide are stateless\, and many among them are children. This means they are not recognised by any country\, they are not provided with birth certificates\, and they are denied access to education\, legal employment\, health\, etc. According to 2023 numbers\, over 170 people in Malta are stateless and half of them are children. \nThis evening we will have a community discussion that we hope will help in pressuring the Maltese government to take action and enforce the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, and international law\, and take measures that allow migrant children to live a dignified life.

DESCRIPTION:25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Moviment Graffitti\, together with Young Progressive Beings\, is organising a protest march and action as a form of resistance to the culture of violence that characterises our patriarchal society. \nA culture of violence is one which normalises\, justifies and therefore creates a context where violence can flourish in all its forms. Violence against women can be domestic\, physical\, sexual\, social\, moral\, psychological\, economic\, political\, religious\, financial you name it\, women have been subjected to it. We live in a society where violence against women is often concealed behind jokes\, unwanted comments full of sexual connotations (often disguised as compliments)\, and other stereotyped behaviour. \n\nOn Sunday 26th November\, we will be meeting near the Triton Fountain at 11.00 a.m. to march in protest against this culture of violence and to empower women to resist violence in all its forms. Join us. Be part of the fight against gender-based violence\, which affects mostly women. You can bring your own placards or use ours.

DESCRIPTION:To mark this year’s World AIDS Day\, Moviment Graffitti\, MGRM (HIV Malta) and Checkpoint Malta are jointly organising a community discussion about HIV. \nMalta has the highest rate of HIV diagnosis in the EU at 15.9 per 100\,000 population according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC\, 2022). Over the past decade\, the rate of HIV diagnosis has more than doubled. Yet\, this topic is hardly discussed on a social level. There is still a lot of secrecy and stigma surrounding HIV especially in the wider society. \nWe would like to invite you to participate in this intimate conversation on the subject on Friday 1st December between 6.00 and 8.00 p.m. at Maori\, Valletta. DESCRIPTION:Released just 10 months before her demise\, Nothing Compares is not just a documentary that highlights the artistic talent of Sinnead O’ Connor\, but how she was also consistently vociferous when it came to women’s rights and human rights in general\, her bold stance against the war and her political stand and comments about the Catholic church at the time. A person also described as being ‘ahead of her time’\, the artist was a beacon of truth in a harsh music industry that did and does still impose beauty and behavioural standards on female artists. \nThis documentary is a powerful movie\, with recounts narrated by Sinnead herself\, and those who worked with and/or knew her closely. \nWe shall be showing it at our premises in Valletta on 5th December at 6:30pm.

SUMMARY:Genocide in the Mediterranean - Gaza Beach Symbolic Action
DESCRIPTION:Not too far away from us\, on the coast of the Mediterranean\, a genocide is currently unfolding before our eyes. Like Malta\, Gaza has sandy beaches\, with the difference that on them and around them\, a genocide is being perpetrated by Israel on the Palestinians. \nOn Saturday 3rd February at 3pm\, we will be gathering at Għadira Bay in a symbolic action against the genocide in Gaza\, where we will call for action by Malta and the rest of the world so that Israel ends its atrocities against the Palestinian people. \nThe International Court of Justice (ICJ) has just rejected Israel’s request to stop hearing the accusations of genocide against it. The Court also recognised the alarming nature of the actions and statements by Israel’s leaders\, ordering Israel to stop killing the Palestinians and to end its siege on Gaza. \nHowever\, Israel had already stated that it would not be abiding by the decisions of the international courts. \nThe genocide of the Palestinians is still ongoing\, and it will not stop as long as Israel continues to receive support from the United States and Europe. \nWe invite you to join us on Saturday\, so that we continue to show our solidarity with the Palestinians in such a tragic moment in recent history. \n FREE PALESTINE  \n******* \nĠENOĊIDJU FIL-MEDITERRAN – AZZJONI SIMBOLIKA ‘BAJJA TA’ GAŻA’ \nFtit ‘il bogħod minna\, fil-Mediterran\, għaddej ġenoċidju. SUMMARY:Ċine-Palestina Women: 3000 Nights
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another edition of Ċine-Palestina where we will be screening the film 3000 Nights (2015)\, dir. Mai Masri. \nAs part of our lead up for Women’s Day 2024 we are raising awareness on the conditions of Palestinian women within the Israeli occupation’s prison system. The film follows our protagonist\, Layal\, a Palestinian school teacher hailing from Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Layal and her husband are prepared to make their way to Canada\, when Layal is apprehended by the Israeli military at a checkpoint. The film follows the events following her arrest and sentencing. \nEntrance is free\, and snacks and drinks will be available. We hope to see you there!
