DESCRIPTION:This year is Moviment Graffitti’s 25th year. Like any other twenty-five year old who has seen a bit of life already\, and yearns for more\, we’ll be celebrating with some events. \nEXHIBITION: A weekend-long exhibition at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta detailing\, in pictures and artifacts\, Moviment Graffitti’s quarter of a century from the very early days. The exhibition will be open on \n\nFriday: 6:30pm to 10pm\nSaturday: 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 10pm\nSunday: 3pm to 8pm\n\nFRIDAY 11 OCTOBER at 6:30pm: We will open the exhibition through the screening of R/Evoluzzjoni 25\, a showreel featuring interviews from people who have followed Graffitti’s history throughout the years including journalists James Debono and Karl Schembri\, past members like Christian Mizzi and Mary Grace Vella\, trade-unionist Sammy Meilaq and many others\, as well as footage of old and recent Graffitti actions. Johnson led the Stonewall riots\, in 1969\, alongside Sylvia Rivera\, and later established the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR)\, a group committed to helping homeless transgender youth in New York City. \nFilmmakers investigate the mysterious death of Marsha P. The aim of this protest is to bring together residents\, workers\, farmers\, students and organisations who are fed up of excessive and haphazard construction so as to make their voices heard in opposition to the madness that is consuming our country. We believe that together we can change this situation and fight the excessive power of the few who treat Malta as their own patch of land through which they can speculate and make profits. \nTherefore\, all formal and informal associations (NGOs\, resident associations\, student groups\, workers’ associations and farmers) from Malta and Gozo may reply to this public call by contacting us on info@7settembru.org or by filling in the online form here: www.7settembru.org. \nGroups affiliated with political parties will be turned down. \nThe protest will also make a number of demands related to (view full text of demands here: www.7settembru.org) \ni) Policies: A radical change in planning policies so that these can truly respect the interests of the majority\, including future generations\, instead of protecting the profits of the few.\nii) Authorities Responsible for the Environment and Planning: The operations and decisions taken by these authorities should be free from commercial and political interests; we want democratic authorities that can truly decide in the best interests of our country.\niii) Large-Scale Projects: A moratorium on large-scale projects until a comprehensive and serious plan for development in Malta is introduced. This plan should ensure that these types of projects respect the community and are sustainable.\niv) The Regulation of the Construction Industry: A system whereby developers and authorities are truly responsible of the work that is being carried out in construction sites so as to ensure that this doesn’t endanger or disturb people’s lives.\nv) Roads and Transportation: Government should reconsider the decision to build and widen roads that will destroy a scandalously huge amount of trees and arable land. Instead\, Government should be working on the creation and implementation of a strategy that truly addresses the traffic and pollution issues\, and this strategy should include serious investment in alternative means of transport.

SUMMARY:PA Meeting on the Central Link Project
DESCRIPTION:It is in the interest of all residents of Attard to attend this meeting. This project shall neither reduce traffic nor pollution\, but actually increase it due to induced demand\, a phenomenon that has been stated and accepted by Transport Malta itself. This project shall destroy over 48\,000 metres squared of agriculture land (the size of 6 football grounds)\, ruin a number of full time farmers and destroying over almost 600 trees and a good number of them protected. It will also destroy a cluster of buildings that are thought to be the oldest part of the Attard\, something that has been pointed out by ERA. \nThe application shall be discussed and decided by the Planning Board at the meeting to be held on 18 July 2019. The sitting will be held from 10:00 hours onwards\, at the Planning Authority Boardroom\, St Francis Ravelin\, Floriana. \nWhoever is interested to be present is required to register his/her interest by contacting the Planning Board Secretariat on 2290 2020. \nSuitable attire for a public board meeting is requested. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not considered suitable.

DESCRIPTION:Following the serious building collapses that have happened around the island as a result of construction works\, Moviment Graffitti is organising a protest in front of the MDA offices this Tuesday\, 18th June. DESCRIPTION:As a member of the coalition Voice for Choice – L-għażla tagħha\, Moviment Graffitti is organizing an Open Mic at Maori bar where verses with the theme of freedom of choice and bodily autonomy will be read. Everyone is welcome to participate by reading poems\, prose\, personal stories\, songs or any writings and thoughts on the chosen theme of the importance of deciding on our own body. Both original and not-so-original readings are welcome. \nThis event aims to give a voice to individuals who would like to share their own experiences\, thoughts and sensitivities about the importance of having the choice to decide whether or not to continue with a pregnancy. We believe that in Malta\, reproductive health and rights need to be put on the political agenda\, to be discussed critically and maturely rather than remain a taboo. Occasions to speak about them are essential to overcome the present situation. \nThe activity starts at 7.00 pm to give us time to gather and have a drink. The readings will start at around 8.00pm. DESCRIPTION:On the evening of the 6th April\, Lassana Cisse Souleymane was murdered in Hal Far. Two other men were also victims in this attack. \nLassana’s life mattered. DESCRIPTION:Several organisations will hold a Press Conference to state that an informed discussion about the Malta-Gozo tunnel has yet to start. \nWhilst fully acknowledging the need to address mobility challenges experienced by Gozitan workers and students\, there is currently a total lack of studies and information on the utility and impacts of the tunnel. Indeed\, it has not even been established whether a tunnel will actually facilitate mobility between the two islands. \nThe organisations will state that a decision on whether a tunnel is the best solution to mobility challenges should only be taken after independent\, serious and holistic studies have been conducted. DESCRIPTION:On the eve of International Women’s Day\, Moviment Graffitti invites you to the screening of the movie ‘Made in Dagehnam’\, followed by a discussion\, drinks and nibbles. \nEveryone is welcome. Free entry. \n‘Made in Dagenham’ is a 2010 British movie directed by Nigel Cole. The movie tells the true story of the Ford sewing machinists’ strike of 1968\, demanding equal pay for women. The protagonist\, a fictional character\, leads the 850 female workers of the East London plant to protest against sexual discrimination and for equal pay. The strike was successful and led to the Equal Pay Act  of 1970. \nUntil 1968\, the female machinists at Ford were classified within the company’s pay structure as grade B. That meant they were officially considered as unskilled\, despite having to pass tests in order to gain their employment. \nInternational Women’s Day – 8th March – marks women’s struggle for equality and against patriarchy. The origin of this day is rooted in Communist women’s groups in the beginning of the 20th century. Women from all around the world have fought and obtained better conditions in their lives\, on many levels. Still\, our society is rife with contradictions and inequality. Women’s work is still widely undervalued and unequal pay persists. Violence against women is a dramatic reality; in 2018\, four women were murdered in Malta by their partner or a close relative. Moreover\, we consider the present taboo on reproductive rights in Malta as undermining women’s freedom\, health and wellbeing. \nThe fight against patriarchy has to continue. \nWishing you a feminist International Women’s Day!

DESCRIPTION:On Monday 4th February at 2pm\, the Parliamentary Standing Committee responsible for the Environment and Development Planning will discuss the proposed Corinthia deal. \nThe public is encouraged to attend this meeting. Please bring your ID Card with you as it is needed to access Parliament building. \nThis discussion is being held following a request by a large number of NGOs\, residents’ groups and three Local Councils for an urgent meeting of the Committee to discuss the imminent concession of title\, land and environmental rights to the Corinthia Group (IHI). They had stated that this concession will have repercussions on all stakeholders\, the public and the natural environment\, and that these repercussions will be direct and will contribute to their quality of life. \nMoreover\, they stated that the public has a right to know whether the necessary studies for such a massive development have been conducted and concluded. Food and drinks will be provided. \nThis event aims to create a safe space were people who identify under the trans* spectrum can mingle and get to know one another.

DESCRIPTION:On International Safe Abortion Day the group 8th March 365 is proposing an activity to continue to discuss and rise awareness about women’s reproductive rights. We will screen the movie Vera Drake and we will give an overview about reproductive rights worldwide. \nVera Drake is a 2004 British film written and directed by Mike Leigh. Vera is a working-class woman who performs illegal abortions in London in 1950. The director incorporates in the movie elements of his own childhood\, moreover he shows differences between working-class women and upper-class women regarding abortion when it was illegal. The movie won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. \n28th September was first celebrated as a day of action for decriminalization of abortion in Latin America and The Caribbean in 1990. In 2011\, the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) declared the 28 September as International Safe Abortion Day.

SUMMARY:Meet the Sea Rescue NGOs
DESCRIPTION:Who are these NGOs? Who funds them? Are they really in cahoots with traffickers? Do they incentivise migrants to embark on such a perilous journey? What happens when rescue NGOs are no longer allowed to operate? \nMuch has been said in the past few months about the sea rescue of refugees leaving Libya in their bid to reach Europe. Standoffs between Italy\, Malta and other countries concerning the disembarkation of people saved at sea dominated news headlines\, and we have all seen the shocking images of dead bodies washed ashore on the Libyan coasts. \nAmidst all this\, a spotlight was shone on the NGOs saving people from rickety boats or dinghies. Currently\, many of the NGO vessels are docked in Malta and permission to leave the port is being denied by Maltese authorities. \nThe public will have the opportunity to ask questions to those directly involved in NGO rescue operations.
