DESCRIPTION:Studenti Graffitti will be present at The KSU Freshers’ Week 2021 on Monday the 4th and Wednesday 6th of October between 9 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. \nWe invite you to visit our stand if you are interested in joining an organisation which is active in the community in areas such as the environment\, feminism\, worker’s rights\, immigration\, LGBTIQ+ rights and more. \nMembers from Moviment Graffitti will be present to explain what the role of the organisation is in the current context ad give you more information on current campaigns such as the campaign against the Marsaskala Yacht Marina\, the pro-choice campaign and others. \nWe would like to hear your ideas on the issues or problems you find at University so that Studenti Graffitti can also be a platform for student campaigns. Jekk ma tixtiequx tgħumu\, tistgħu tingħaqdu magħna xorta waħda. \nL-għajta tagħna tibqa’ dik li Transport Malta tirtira immedjatament is-sejħa li għamlet għall-bini tal-Yacht Marina. \nL-EBDA YACHT MARINA F’WIED IL-GĦAJN \nLa issa u lanqas qatt. \n****** \nNO to the Yacht Marina in Marsaskala! \n Together with residents of Marsaskala and all those who have the town at heart\, we are going to continue our fight against plans for a Yacht Marina in the locality\, and this time we’ll be protesting with a difference. \n On Saturday\, 11th September at 4pm\, we’ll meet at the Simenta in Triq is-Salini for a protest swim\, Għawma Kontra l-Marina (A Swim Against the Marina). \n We encourage everyone to participate in this protest so that the message reaches them loud and clear: the public will not accept that a few rich people steal its public spaces. \n The theft of a bay and public beach by hundreds of yachts will only serve the interests of the few\, and will choke the residents of Marsaskala and the thousands who regularly visit this town and its surroundings. The project will also mean a huge environmental loss. Transport Malta wants to cover huge parts of the seabed – the size of two and a half football pitches – by reclaiming land in various parts of the bay. \n Bring your swimsuits\, towels\, placards\, and all your anger at this plan. Transport Malta plans to reclaim a huge part of the seabed – roughly the size of two and a half football pitches – in various parts of the bay. \n We cannot allow them to build up and choke every inch of our country. \nJoin us in the defence of what is ours by right and to protest the relentless theft of our open spaces. \nSee you on Friday. Se nkunu qed insegwu l-miżuri tad-distanza soċjali kollha. \n******** \nPRESS CONFERENCE – DO NOT SUFFOCATE MARSASKALA! \nNO to the Yacht Marina in Marsaskala! \n Transport Malta has issued a call for a Yacht Marina in Marsaskala. The plans reveal complete takeover of the bay and suffocation of the surrounding areas. During this press conference\, residents\, local organisations and Moviment Graffitti will explain how this project is an abomination and call for widespread opposition. Further action to halt this obscenity will also be announced. \n The proposed project in Marsaskala includes berths for yachts on every part of the bay\, mechanisms to harness the very waves which give life to the bay and land reclamation set to destroy the seabed. \n The proposal sidelined any form of consultation with residents or stakeholders with direct interest in the locality. Plans for the Yacht Marina further prove that the Malta Tourism Authority’s Design Contest for the regeneration of Marsaskala\, launched a few months ago\, is nothing but the carrying out of secret plans long in the making. \n The public is invited to attend this Press Conference. SUMMARY:How can prisons be more humane?
DESCRIPTION:Malta’s prison system has been repeatedly flagged as inhumane\, arbitrary and ultimately\, ineffective in its goal of rehabilitating offenders by several media outlets. \nAs Moviment Graffitti\, we have organised this event in conjunction with KSU to provide a platform for a much-needed discussion on this subject. \nThe event will feature a panel composed of former journalist and prison reform activist Peppi Azzopardi\, David Grech\, a man who was held under arrest and spoke of the conditions he was held in earlier this year\, forensic psychologist Roberta Holland\, RISe foundation president Charles Mifsud and criminology academic Mary Grace Vella. \nThe discussion will be held at the KSU-PwC Common Room in Msida on July 7 at 6pm\, with very limited seating options available due to COVID-19 restrictions. \nAnyone who wishes to book one of the seats and attend the discussion in-person should contact us directly via a message on Facebook. \nWe will be discussing alternatives to Malta’s prison system with the aim of spreading more awareness on the conditions being endured and the possibilities of a better\, more humane future. \nThe panel discussion will be hosted by Moviment Graffitti activist Julian Delia. \nWe will be livestreaming the event on the day\, from both our Facebook page as well as KSU’s.

Din il-Konferenza Stampa mistennija tieħu biss siegħa minn ħinkom. \n****** \nURGENT PRESS CONFERENCE – A CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! \n The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has recently proposed a master plan and a vision for the upgrade and urban regeneration of our village – Marsaskala. As residents of Marsaskala\, we are concerned about the proposal’s reference to ‘upgrades’ and ‘developments’. In the past\, such references meant mass-development plans that would forever ruin the character of our village. The massive apartment complex proposed to replace the Jerma Palace Hotel\, and the building of the 3rd waterpolo site in Marsaskala\, are some of the proposals which pose a direct threat to the public’s enjoyment of open spaces\, including the coast. \n The Press Conference will also address what has long been going on behind our backs to accommodate certain commercial enterprises at the expense of our bay and the common good. \n In light of all of the above\, and in collaboration with Moviment Graffitti\, we are holding a Press Conference on the 19th of June 2021 at 10am at is-Simenta – just in front of the Local Parish Church by the sea. We encourage all Marsaskala residents invested in our village to attend this Press Conference. We need to show our support and unity against any further greedy developments\, which will forever ruin our beautiful village. \n Note that all social distancing measures will be observed and that the event will not take more than an hour of your time.

In-nisa ġġieldu għall-ugwaljanza biex itejbu l-ħajja tagħhom u jiksbu l-libertà u r-rispett li jixirqilhom. SUMMARY:Massive Xlendi Development - PA Hearing
DESCRIPTION:The decision on the application for the demolition and excavation of a site which will eventually be developed into a 13-storey four-star hotel towering over Xlendi bay will be taken on Tuesday 26th January at 10.00 am. \nWe are encouraging the public to attend this meeting in order to voice its opposition to this project. \n TO ATTEND THE MEETING REGISTER FROM HERE: https://bit.ly/361JrwC \n Despite public outrage at this application\, with hundreds of residents\, together with the Local Council and Gozitan organisations\, voicing their objections to this development\, the case officer has recommended it for approval. Should permission be granted for phase 1 of the development\, which foresees the demolition and excavation of the site\, the site will be committed for development. This would essentially mean that approval of phase 2 of the development\, which covers the redevelopment of the site and the construction of a massive hotel\, would be a foregone conclusion\, rendering the planning process futile and nothing short of farcical. \n The PA has recently granted permission to another massive development right next to the proposed site. It would therefore be sheer and utter madness to allow another large-scale project to go ahead in the same area. Xlendi has already been considerably mutilated by overdevelopment; allowing more development to go ahead will permanently destroy the little that is left of its original character and aesthetic.

SUMMARY:Let’s Talk About Violence Against Women
DESCRIPTION:One in every four women in Malta experiences some form of violence. The last femicide was reported as recently as February. We cannot remain silent while women and girls continue to be victims of violence. \nOn Wednesday\, 25th November between 7.00 and 8.30 p.m.\, Moviment Graffitti is organising a webinar to observe the United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. While this day has become part of the UN calendar in 2000\, women’s rights activists have been observing this day and raising awareness about violence against women since 1981\, when they commemorated the assassination of three sisters by the dictatorship of the Dominican Republic which they had opposed and fought. \nThe speakers are the following: \n\nDr Marceline Naudi\, University of Malta academic and activist\nMs Elaine Compagno\, an activist for survivors of domestic violence\nMs Amanda Cossai\, an activist from the Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement (MGRM)\nMs Maria Borg – working with women in prostitution\n\nThe webinar will be streamed live from this event.

DESCRIPTION:Following the behind-closed-doors deal between the Government and the hunting lobby gifting Miżieb and Aħrax to FKNK\, Spazji Miftuħa is organising a sit-down protest with social distancing on Saturday 31st October 2020 at 10am in front of the Office of the Prime Minister in Castille. \nPeople are outraged at what the Government has been doing to Malta’s and Gozo’s natural and cultural heritage. \nThe 60+ NGOs in the coalition are asking their supporters together with all those who value nature\, culture and open spaces\, to join in this peaceful sit-down protest in Valletta. \nYou are being encouraged to bring along placards or signs with your own personal messages. DESCRIPTION:Peaceful gathering in memory of Sarah Hegazi in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Malta! \nSARAH HEGAZI (1989-2020) \nSarah Hegazi was an Egyptian lesbian activist. On September 22\, 2017\, Sarah Hegazi attended a concert for Mashrou’ Leila whose lead singer\, Hamed Sinno\, is openly gay. She was arrested along with a group of others for waving a rainbow flag in support of LGBT rights. Her arrest coincided with Egypt’s zero-tolerance crackdown response to end public support for LGBT rights in the country. She recalled being jailed\, beaten and abused by inmates for three months. She had claimed asylum and was living in Canada while undergoing PTSD from the prison torture experience she underwent in Egypt. DESCRIPTION:Monday 6/04/2020 marks the one-year anniversary of Lassana Cisse’s death – a murder which was the result of a racially-motivated hate crime. \nWhile his two murderers roam free and continue living their lives out on bail\, this despite having also injured three other migrants in total\, Lassana’s life was cut short\, his only crime being that he was black. \nTo let this day go by just like any other day would mean that Lassana died in vain. In commemoration of this tragedy\, we would like to encourage you to share pictures\, photos and videos in remembrance of Lassana’s life\, and messages of solidarity with the other three victims who are still awaiting justice and with migrants who are still suffering racial discrimination and injustice on a daily basis to this Page. Yet\, we still cannot consider our society to be free from patriarchal attitudes and behaviours. Girls and women get harassed on several occasions in their daily lives. Sexist and misogynist language and messages are widely used in the form of friendly ambiguous jokes\, as well as in advertisements\, in the media and on social networks. \nDramatically\, Malta has witnessed several cases of domestic violence and a number of femicides (women killed by their partner\, their ex-partner or a relative) in the past years\, the last case\, just at the beginning of February\, being that of 34-year old Chantelle Chetcuti\, who was brutally murdered by her ex-partner. \nWe invite all women and all those living in Malta who want to raise their voice against gender inequality and sexism to join us on Sunday 8th March. SUMMARY:Protesta Kontra l-Ħakma tal-Iżviluppaturi
DESCRIPTION:Following the death of Miriam Pace in a tragedy caused by yet another act of carelessness by the development lobby\, Moviment Graffitti is calling for a non-partisan protest against the unsustainable situation in which our country finds itself. Residents and citizens are held hostage by a group of developers who consider themselves above the law and have total control over politics\, its players\, and the authorities that should be administering it. \nThe construction lobby is continuously interfering in reforms in this sector and insists that its profits\, not decency\, are the most important value. The lack of enforcement in the sector\, inadequate laws\, a complete laissez-faire in planning\, the lack of safety in construction sites\, and the arrogant bullying attitude of this lobby are the result of years and years of donations and pressure on the world of politics. \nThis latest fatality is the direct result of this situation. Together with this\, the legal notice drafted by Robert Musumeci after a spate of similar incidents last summer is the product of incompetence and servility towards the construction lobby. As we have repeated many times\, accidents like this were going to continue because this “reform” did not tackle\, in any manner\, the structural problems within the system. \nBesides a justified expression of anger on part of the public\, during this protest we will be asking for a serious and decent approach in the construction industry. We are presenting proposals for a reform that will relieve residents of their financial and logistical burdens\, that will give workers their rights and safety\, that will introduce the licensing of contractors and developers\, as well as the introduction of a points and blacklisting system. DESCRIPTION:Moviment Graffitti invites you to the screening of “The Help”\, a 2011 film directed by Tate Taylor and adapted from Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel. \nThe film takes place in the 1960s in the US\, when the civil rights movement was rising but black people were still facing abhorrent racial discrimination in all aspects of their lives. The Help talks about the harshness experienced by black women working as maids with rich white families\, but also about their friendship\, complicity and happy moments. The lives of the characters of the film starts to change when a young white woman aspiring to become a journalist decides to write about the injustice faced by the Afro-American women working as maids. \nFebruary is known as Black History month in the US and Canada\, with the intention of remembering the injustice and discrimination faced by black people in these countries in the past centuries\, and to raise awareness about racism still present in society today. \nThe screening will be followed by an open discussion\, drinks and nibbles. \nFree entrance.

DESCRIPTION:BALLUTA BAY UNDER THREAT – PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING \nThe decision on the application for Fortina’s private ferry in Balluta Bay will be taken on Monday 3rd February at 9:30am\, during a Planning Commission meeting at the PA Boardroom. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting in order to voice its opposition to this project. \nShould permission be granted for this jetty\, Balluta Bay would be transformed into a berthing place for Fortina’s private ferry. Basically\, Balluta Bay would suffer the same fate as the Ferries in Sliema\, where this same company took over the largest part of the shore for its private ferries. \nIf approved\, it would: \n\nDeny the residents of Sliema and St. Julian’s\, all Maltese and Gozitans and also tourists\, the enjoyment of one of Malta’s most important beaches. A jetty for a private ferry in such a small beach will inevitably mean constant hazards for bathers and sea pollution.\nContinue the takeover of public spaces for private interests. Fortina’s jetty has no public benefit – it is NOT an alternative means of transport. SUMMARY:Screening of Binxet - Under the Border
DESCRIPTION:Moviment Graffitti invites you the screening of the 2017 documentary ‘Binxet – Under the Border’. This is an occasion to enjoy a film night together while learning more about the region of Rojava\, its recent history and what has been happening there. The film describes the 911 km border between Turkey and Rojava and the stories of people living along it. \nThe director\, Luigi D’Alife\, is a young Italian director interested in exploring “hidden” realities of our society. \nRojava is the East and North Syria and its population is mostly Kurdish\, although there is also a variety of minorities including Arab\, Assyrian\, Turkmen and Armenian. When Syria was at war\, this region declared itself as autonomous and implemented a revolutionary democratic confederalism aiming for gender equality\, environmental sustainability and direct democracy. The independent armies of Rojava (JPG and YPG) have fought against ISIS and obtained their independence. Last Autumn\, Turkey started a heavy attack against Rojava\, one which hasn’t stopped yet. \nMoviment Graffitti organised a protest in solidarity with Rojava last 19th October together with people from that region living in Malta. \nWe support the independent government of Rojava and its revolutionary project and hope for change! \nThe screening will be in the original language with English subtitles and will be followed by a discussion with a person from the Kurdish community living in Malta. \nThis event is free of charge. Drinks and nibbles will be also available.

SUMMARY:Planning a Year of Activism
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 25th January at 6pm we will be holding an informal meeting with our members and with the public during which we will take a look at our work during 2019 and discuss our plans for this year. \nThis initiative will also serve as the Annual General Meeting of Moviment Graffitti. However\, for this meeting we are not inviting only members\, but also all those who would like to know more about our vision and our work\, and those who have any suggestions or thoughts that they would like to share with us. \nAs a leftist organisation which is active in a wide range of economic\, social and environmental issues\, the work of Moviment Graffitti is only possible due to the voluntary contribution of many people who offer their passion\, skills and ideas for our fight for a just society. It is essential for us to continue discussing our work and plans with different people with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of our activities. \nTowards the end of the meeting we will be screening the documentary ‘R/Evoluzzjoni25’ which\, in 25 minutes\, shows the 25-year history of Moviment Graffitti through interviews and film footage. Huwa essenzjali għalina li nkomplu niddiskutu x-xogħol u l-pjanijiet tagħna ma’ persuni differenti bil-għan li ntejbu l-effettività tal-azzjoni li nwettqu. \nLejn tmiem il-laqgħa ser inkunu qed nuru d-dokumentarju ‘R/Evoluzzjoni25’ li\, permezz ta’ intervisti u filmati\, juri il-25 storja tal-Moviment Graffitti f’25 minuta.
