SUMMARY:Dinjità fil-Ħabs // Vigil for a Humane Prison
DESCRIPTION:Wara li l-Kulunell Alexander Dalli issospenda lilu nnifsu\, nhar is-Sibt 13 ta’ Novembru se niltaqgħu biex niftakru f’dawk kollha li mietu ġewwa l-ħabs minħabba sistema ta’ abbuż fil-Faċilità Korrettiva ta’ Kordin. \nMietu erbatax-il persuna u Malta għandha l-ogħla rata ta suwiċidju fil-ħabs fl-UE. Irridu nuru solidarjetà ma dawn il-priġunieri filwaqt li nesiġu li d-direttur il-ġdid tal-ħabs joħloq ambjent umanitarju u sigur għal dawk li huma maqfulin il-ħabs għax id-dixxiplina m’għandhiex twassal għall-mewt. \nNistennew ukoll li l-awtoritajiet responsabbli\, inkluż il-Ministru tal-Intern\, Byron Camilleri\, jieħdu responsabbiltà politika għal dawn l-imwiet bla sens. Minkejja s-sospensjonijiet\, ħadd u xejn ma jista’ jgħaqqad lill-familji ta’ dawk li mietu mal-maħbubin tagħhom. \nJekk jogħġobkom ġibu magħkom xemgħat u fjuri. Se niltaqgħu quddiem il-Ħabs ta’ Kordin fil-5.00 p.m. \n****** \nDinjità fil-ħabs | Vigil for a humane prison \nFollowing the suspension of Colonel Alexander Dalli\, on Saturday\, 13th November we are meeting to mourn all those who have died in prison because of a system of abuse at the Corradino Correctional Facility. \nFourteen people have died and Malta has the EU’s highest suicide rate in prison. We want to show solidarity with these prisoners and demand that the new prison director creates a safe\, humane environment for those who are incarcerated because discipline does not have to lead to death. \nWe also expect the responsible authorities\, including Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri\, to take political responsibility for these senseless deaths. No matter who is suspended\, nothing can be done to reunite families with their loved ones. \nPlease bring candles and flowers. We will meet in front of Corradino Correctional Facility at 5.00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Protesta b'Differenza - Għawma Kontra l-Marina
DESCRIPTION:LE għall-Yacht Marina f’Marsaskala! \n Flimkien mar-residenti Skalin u ma’ kull min iħobb lil Wied il-Għajn ser inkomplu bil-ġlieda kontra l-pjan ta’ Yacht Marina fil-lokalità\, din id-darba permezz ta’ protesta b’differenza. \n Nhar is-Sibt 11 ta’ Settembru fl-4pm se niltaqgħu fuq is-Simenta ta’ Triq is-Salini għal Għawma Kontra l-Marina. \n Nħeġġu lil kulħadd jipparteċipa f’din il-protesta sabiex ikompli jasal ċar il-messaġġ li l-poplu mhux lest jaċċetta li ftit sinjuruni jisirqulu l-ispazji pubbliċi tiegħu. \n Is-serq ta’ bajja u xtajta pubblika minn mijiet ta’ jottijiet se jservi biss biex jinqdew l-interessi tal-ftit\, filwaqt li se jifga lill-Iskalin u lil eluf oħra li regolarment iżuru dan il-post u l-madwar. Il-proġett se jfisser ukoll qerda ambjentali kbira. Transport Malta trid tordom parti kbira minn qiegħ il-baħar – id-daqs ta’ żewġ grawnds u nofs tal-futbol – permezz ta’ reklamazzjoni tal-art f’diversi partijiet tal-bajja. \n Ġibu magħkom il-malja\, xugamani\, affarijiet tal-baħar\, kartelluni u r-rabja kollha tagħkom għal dan il-pjan. Jekk ma tixtiequx tgħumu\, tistgħu tingħaqdu magħna xorta waħda. \nL-għajta tagħna tibqa’ dik li Transport Malta tirtira immedjatament is-sejħa li għamlet għall-bini tal-Yacht Marina. \nL-EBDA YACHT MARINA F’WIED IL-GĦAJN \nLa issa u lanqas qatt. \n****** \nNO to the Yacht Marina in Marsaskala! \n Together with residents of Marsaskala and all those who have the town at heart\, we are going to continue our fight against plans for a Yacht Marina in the locality\, and this time we’ll be protesting with a difference. \n On Saturday\, 11th September at 4pm\, we’ll meet at the Simenta in Triq is-Salini for a protest swim\, Għawma Kontra l-Marina (A Swim Against the Marina). \n We encourage everyone to participate in this protest so that the message reaches them loud and clear: the public will not accept that a few rich people steal its public spaces. \n The theft of a bay and public beach by hundreds of yachts will only serve the interests of the few\, and will choke the residents of Marsaskala and the thousands who regularly visit this town and its surroundings. The project will also mean a huge environmental loss. Transport Malta wants to cover huge parts of the seabed – the size of two and a half football pitches – by reclaiming land in various parts of the bay. \n Bring your swimsuits\, towels\, placards\, and all your anger at this plan. If you do not wish to swim\, you can join us all the same. \nOur battle cry hasn’t changed: Transport Malta must immediately withdraw its call for the construction of the Yacht Marina. \nNO MARINA IN MARSASKALA \nNot now\, not ever.

SUMMARY:Peaceful Gathering in Memory of Sarah Hegazi
DESCRIPTION:Peaceful gathering in memory of Sarah Hegazi in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Malta! \nSARAH HEGAZI (1989-2020) \nSarah Hegazi was an Egyptian lesbian activist. On September 22\, 2017\, Sarah Hegazi attended a concert for Mashrou’ Leila whose lead singer\, Hamed Sinno\, is openly gay. She was arrested along with a group of others for waving a rainbow flag in support of LGBT rights. Her arrest coincided with Egypt’s zero-tolerance crackdown response to end public support for LGBT rights in the country. She recalled being jailed\, beaten and abused by inmates for three months. She had claimed asylum and was living in Canada while undergoing PTSD from the prison torture experience she underwent in Egypt. She died by suicide on June 14\, 2020. \nSarah’s last words:\n“الى اخوتي حاولت النجاة وفشلت، سامحوني\nالى اصدقائي\nالتجربة قاسية وانا اضعف من ان اقوامها، سامحوني\nالى العالم\nلقد كنت قاسيا الى حد عظيم ولكني اسامح ”\nسارة حجازي \nTo my siblings\,\nI have tried to find salvation and I failed; forgive me.\nTo my friends\,\nThe journey was cruel and I am too weak to resist; forgive me.\nTo the world\,\nYou were cruel to a great extent; but I forgive.”\n– Sarah Higazi \n“السما احلى من الأرض، وأنا عاوزه السما مش الأرض\nThe sky is sweeter than the earth\, and I need the sky not the earth.”\nLast post of Sarah

SUMMARY:In Commemoration Of Lassana Cisse's Murder
DESCRIPTION:Monday 6/04/2020 marks the one-year anniversary of Lassana Cisse’s death – a murder which was the result of a racially-motivated hate crime. \nWhile his two murderers roam free and continue living their lives out on bail\, this despite having also injured three other migrants in total\, Lassana’s life was cut short\, his only crime being that he was black. \nTo let this day go by just like any other day would mean that Lassana died in vain. In commemoration of this tragedy\, we would like to encourage you to share pictures\, photos and videos in remembrance of Lassana’s life\, and messages of solidarity with the other three victims who are still awaiting justice and with migrants who are still suffering racial discrimination and injustice on a daily basis to this Page. You can also help out by donating to Migrant Women Association Malta\, who have just launched an emergency fundraising campaign due to an increase in the risk of gender-based violence on migrant women brought about by Covid-19. Please visit their page for further details. \nLassana Cisse will not be forgotten. Our migrant brothers and sisters will not be forgotten. Even if we cannot physically meet\, let us show we care.

SUMMARY:Women's Day March Malta
DESCRIPTION:8 ta’ Marzu Jum il-Mara – 8th March Women’s Day \nMoviment Graffitti and Women’s Rights Foundation\, with the support of the organizations below\, are inviting you to participate in a walk in Valletta on the occasion of Women’s Day. \nWomen’s Day represents all the fights\, efforts\, battles and claims that women from all around the world and in different periods throughout history\, have carried out for equality; to improve their lives and to gain freedom and respect. \nIn the past century\, many changes have happened both legally and in the social and private lives of women in Malta. Yet\, we still cannot consider our society to be free from patriarchal attitudes and behaviours. Girls and women get harassed on several occasions in their daily lives. Sexist and misogynist language and messages are widely used in the form of friendly ambiguous jokes\, as well as in advertisements\, in the media and on social networks. \nDramatically\, Malta has witnessed several cases of domestic violence and a number of femicides (women killed by their partner\, their ex-partner or a relative) in the past years\, the last case\, just at the beginning of February\, being that of 34-year old Chantelle Chetcuti\, who was brutally murdered by her ex-partner. \nWe invite all women and all those living in Malta who want to raise their voice against gender inequality and sexism to join us on Sunday 8th March. We are all different\, everyone facing her/his own struggles caused by a sexist society\, but we can join forces and change this reality. \nNGOs supporting the march:\nAditus Foundation\, Allied Rainbow Communities\, Association for Equality\, Doctors for Choice Malta\, Integra Foundation\, Isles of the left\, LGBT+ Gozo\, MGRM\, Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations\, Men against violence\, Moviment Graffitti\, SOS Malta\, Women for women\, Women’s Rights Foundation\, YPB\, Żminijietna Malta

SUMMARY:Protesta Kontra l-Ħakma tal-Iżviluppaturi
DESCRIPTION:Following the death of Miriam Pace in a tragedy caused by yet another act of carelessness by the development lobby\, Moviment Graffitti is calling for a non-partisan protest against the unsustainable situation in which our country finds itself. Residents and citizens are held hostage by a group of developers who consider themselves above the law and have total control over politics\, its players\, and the authorities that should be administering it. \nThe construction lobby is continuously interfering in reforms in this sector and insists that its profits\, not decency\, are the most important value. The lack of enforcement in the sector\, inadequate laws\, a complete laissez-faire in planning\, the lack of safety in construction sites\, and the arrogant bullying attitude of this lobby are the result of years and years of donations and pressure on the world of politics. \nThis latest fatality is the direct result of this situation. Together with this\, the legal notice drafted by Robert Musumeci after a spate of similar incidents last summer is the product of incompetence and servility towards the construction lobby. As we have repeated many times\, accidents like this were going to continue because this “reform” did not tackle\, in any manner\, the structural problems within the system. \nBesides a justified expression of anger on part of the public\, during this protest we will be asking for a serious and decent approach in the construction industry. We are presenting proposals for a reform that will relieve residents of their financial and logistical burdens\, that will give workers their rights and safety\, that will introduce the licensing of contractors and developers\, as well as the introduction of a points and blacklisting system. These proposals can be viewed online on https://bit.ly/3aqdnCm. \nThis Saturday\, the protest will start at 10.30am from St Thomas More College in Santa Venera\, and will move towards the site of the tragedy where some speeches will be held. \n******** \nPROTESTA KONTRA L-ĦAKMA TAL-IŻVILUPPATURI \nWara t-traġedja li swiet il-mewt lil Miriam Pace minħabba att ieħor ta’ traskuraġni mil-lobby tal-kostruzzjoni\, il-Moviment Graffitti qed isejjaħ protesta mhux partiġġjana kontra s-sitwazzjoni insostenibbli li jinsab fiha pajjiżna. Ir-residenti u ċ-ċittadini jinsabu ostaġġi ta’ grupp ta’ żviluppaturi li jqis ruħu ‘l fuq mil-liġi u li għandu kontroll assolut fuq il-politika\, min jagħmilha\, u l-awtoritajiet li suppost jamminstrawha. \nIl-lobby tal-kostruzzjoni kontinwament twaqqaf ir-riformi fis-settur tal-kostruzzjoni u tinsisti li l-profitt tagħha\, mhux id-deċenza\, hija l-iktar valur importanti. In-nuqqas ta’ infurzar fis-settur\, il-liġijiet difettużi\, il-libertinaġġ assolut fl-ippjanar\, in-nuqqas ta’ sikurezza fis-siti tal-kostruzzjoni\, u l-arroganza u l-prepotenza ta’ din il-lobby huma r-riżultat ta’ snin u snin ta’ donazzjonijiet u pressjonijiet fuq il-politika. \nL-inċident li sewa l-ħajja ta’ Miriam Pace huwa riżultat dirett ta’ din is-sitwazzjoni. Flimkien ma’ dan inżidu li l-legal notice miktuba minn Robert Musumeci tul is-sajf li għadda wara serje ta’ inċidenti simili hija l-prodott tal-inkompetenza u s-servilità lejn din il-lobby. Minn dejjem għedna li dawn l-inċidenti kienu se jibqgħu jseħħu għaliex din ir-“riforma” bl-ebda mod ma indirizzat il-problemi strutturali f’din is-sistema. \nMinbarra li nesprimu l-għadab ġustifikat ta’ parti kbira mill-poplu għal dan kollu\, f’din il-protesta qed nitolbu li tidħol is-serjetà u d-deċenza fl-industrija tal-kostruzzjoni. Qed nippreżentaw proposti għal riforma li ma tħallix il-piżijiet finanzjarji u loġistiċi fuq ir-residenti\, li tagħti lill-ħaddiema d-drittijiet u s-sigurtà meħtieġa\, li tintroduċi l-liċenzjar tal-kuntratturi u l-iżviluppaturi\, kif ukoll sistema ta’ punti u blacklisting. Dawn il-proposti jinsabu online fuq https://bit.ly/3aqdnCm. \nIs-Sibt il-protesta se tibda fl-10.30 minn quddiem il-Kulleġġ St Thomas More\, f’Santa Venera u se timxi lejn is-sit tat-traġedja fejn se jsiru xi diskorsi.

SUMMARY:Malta RiseUp4Rojava
DESCRIPTION:The Kurdish community in Malta\, with the support of Moviment Graffitti\, are organising a peaceful gathering on Saturday 19th October at 10am\, outside the Turkish embassy in Floriana\, to condemn the Turkish invasion of Northern Syria (Rojava) and the brutal\, unprovoked assault by the Turkish state on communities in this area. \nOn Saturday\, people in Malta will join the global outrage at Turkey’s invasion that is resulting in the massacre of Kurds and other communities in Rojava and their displacement on a mass scale. The actions of the Turkish state are clearly driven by its hatred of Kurds – a group that also suffers systematic oppression and state violence within Turkey itself – as well as by its desire to destroy the egalitarian and democratic model being built in Rojava. \nIn fact\, Turkey is using Islamist militias to carry out its war on communities in Rojava\, and these are engaging in the cold-blooded assassination of Kurdish civilians such as woman’s rights activist and political leader Hevrin Khalaf. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also made it clear he aims to change the demographics of Northern Syria. This demographic re-engineering is already at an advanced stage in the Kurdish province of Afrin. After the Turkish invasion of this province last year\, Turkish-backed Islamist militias have driven Kurdish people out of their homes and lands\, to replace them with people coming from other parts of Syria. Kurdish and other communities are thus facing the imminent risk of being ethnically cleansed from large swathes of Syria. \nIt is truly saddening that Turkey’s abhorrent actions are being enabled by the United States’ betrayal of the Kurds and the inaction of European countries. Only four years ago\, the world was celebrating the liberation of Kobane – one of the main cities in Northern Syria – by Kurdish fighters from the hands of ISIS. Now\, those Kurdish forces and Rojava communities that had been used to effectively clear ISIS from the region and that were pivotal in the defeat of this terrorist group\, have been completely and cruelly abandoned to Erdoğan’s ambition to destroy the Kurds and other communities in this region. \nThe Turkish invasion is threatening to revive the ISIS insurgency as thousands of ISIS members held in camps guarded by the Kurdish forces will take the opportunity provided by the fighting to flee and reconstitute terrorist cells. Kurdish forces guarding ISIS prisoners have been targeted by the Turkish army and renewed ISIS activity in Rojava has been reported. One should also note that\, for years\, Turkey has permitted weapons\, recruits\, and resources to reach ISIS through its borders. \nBoth ISIS and the Turkish invasion pose an existential threat\, not only to Kurds\, but also to all the ethnic minorities and religious groups indigenous to the region\, including Arabs\, Christians (Armenians\, Assyrians\, Chaldeans\, and Syriacs)\, Turkmens\, Chechens\, Alevites\, and Yazidis. \nOn Saturday\, we will gather outside the Turkish embassy in Floriana to call upon the world to take action and stop the invasion of Rojava\, the ongoing massacre of communities in this area and the renewed ISIS threat brought about by the Turkish government’s actions. We also urge the Maltese Government to honour its Constitutional obligation to actively work for peace by informing the Turkish ambassador that Malta forcefully opposes the Turkish invasion of Rojava.

SUMMARY:Iż-Żejjed Kollu Żejjed - Protesta
DESCRIPTION:Il-Moviment Graffitti qed jiftaħ sejħa għall-parteċipazzjoni għal protesta nazzjonali fi spazju ħieles mill-politika partiġġjana nhar is-Sibt 7 ta’ Settembru ġewwa l-Belt Valletta. \nIt-talbiet ta’ din il-protesta huma (ara t-talbiet sħaħ hawnhekk – www.7settembru.org) \ni) Policies: Bidla radikali fil-policies tal-ippjanar sabiex dawn jibdew iħarsu l-interessi tal-ħafna\, inkluż tal-ġenerazzjonijiet futuri\, minflok il-qligħ tal-ftit.\nii) L-Awtoritajiet Responsabbli mill-Ambjent u l-Ippjanar: Ix-xogħol u d-deċiżjonijiet ta’ dawn l-entitajiet għandhom ikunu ħielsa minn interessi kummerċjali u politiċi; irridu awtoritajiet demokratiċi li verament jiddeċiedu fl-interess ta’ pajjiżna.\niii) Proġetti Kbar: Nitolbu li dawn il-proġetti kbar ħafna jieqfu sakemm ikun daħal fis-seħħ pjan serju għall-iżvilupp f’pajjiżna li jiżgura li dawn it-tip ta’ proġetti jirrispettaw lill-komunitajiet u jkunu sostenibbli.\niv) Regolamentazzjoni tal-Kostruzzjoni: Irridu sistema li biha l-iżviluppaturi u l-awtoritajiet ikunu verament responsabbli mix-xogħol li jsir f’siti tal-kostruzzjoni sabiex jiġi żgurat li dan ma jipperikolax u ma jħarbatx il-ħajja tan-nies.\nv) Toroq u Trasport: Irridu li l-Gvern jerġa’ jikkunsidra d-deċiżjoni li jinbnew u jitwessgħu toroq li ħa jeqirdu ammont skandaluż ta’ siġar u art agrikola. Minflok\, il-Gvern għandu joħloq u jimplimenta strateġija li verament tindirizza l-problema tat-traffiku u tat-tniggiż u li din tkun tinkludi investiment serju f’mezzi ta’ trasport alternattiv. \n****************** \nEnough is Enough – Protest \nMoviment Graffitti is making a call for participation in a national protest\, in a space free of partisan politics\, on Saturday 7th September in Valletta. The aim of this protest is to bring together residents\, workers\, farmers\, students and organisations who are fed up of excessive and haphazard construction so as to make their voices heard in opposition to the madness that is consuming our country. We believe that together we can change this situation and fight the excessive power of the few who treat Malta as their own patch of land through which they can speculate and make profits. \nTherefore\, all formal and informal associations (NGOs\, resident associations\, student groups\, workers’ associations and farmers) from Malta and Gozo may reply to this public call by contacting us on info@7settembru.org or by filling in the online form here: www.7settembru.org. \nGroups affiliated with political parties will be turned down. \nThe protest will also make a number of demands related to (view full text of demands here: www.7settembru.org) \ni) Policies: A radical change in planning policies so that these can truly respect the interests of the majority\, including future generations\, instead of protecting the profits of the few.\nii) Authorities Responsible for the Environment and Planning: The operations and decisions taken by these authorities should be free from commercial and political interests; we want democratic authorities that can truly decide in the best interests of our country.\niii) Large-Scale Projects: A moratorium on large-scale projects until a comprehensive and serious plan for development in Malta is introduced. This plan should ensure that these types of projects respect the community and are sustainable.\niv) The Regulation of the Construction Industry: A system whereby developers and authorities are truly responsible of the work that is being carried out in construction sites so as to ensure that this doesn’t endanger or disturb people’s lives.\nv) Roads and Transportation: Government should reconsider the decision to build and widen roads that will destroy a scandalously huge amount of trees and arable land. Instead\, Government should be working on the creation and implementation of a strategy that truly addresses the traffic and pollution issues\, and this strategy should include serious investment in alternative means of transport.

SUMMARY:Down with the Developers' Dictatorship // Kontra l-Ħakma tal-Iżviluppaturi

The protest will kick off from St Luke’s Hospital at 6pm\, followed by a short walk in front of the Malta Developers Association (MDA) headquarters. \nGraffitti is inviting residents and resident associations from various localities in Malta to show their displeasure at the way they have been treated by the developers’ lobby and their dictatorship. \nWe are making a list of urgent demands in order to safeguard the safety of residents around Malta\, who are now scared of staying in their own homes: \n\nAn end to the boundless arrogance and bullying of developers on residents;\nA limit to permits issued by the various authorities and an end to the laissez-faire in the planning sector.\nA restriction on the hours in which construction and excavation works can be carried out\, and a limit on the number of road closures and parking slots stolen from residents;\nA law that imposes decent standards to safeguard the residents’ health and safety in areas close to construction sites;\nA serious enforcement of the laws regulating construction\, to give\, without exception\, protection and dignity to workers and residents alike;\nThat responsibility is taken for the permanent deformation of our islands\, particularly when such incidents are involved: so far\, nobody has taken responsibility for any of these accidents.\n\nWe encourage all those who are angry\, fed up and worried about this situation to join this protest. \n********************************** \nKONTRA L-ĦAKMA TAL-IŻVILUPPATURI \nFid-dawl tal-inċidenti gravi li seħħew riċentement fejn numru ta’ djar ċedew minħabba xogħlijiet ta’ kostruzzjoni li kien qed isir biswit\, il-Moviment Graffitti qed jistieden lil residenti u għaqdiet minn bosta lokalitajiet sabiex jingħaqdu miegħu fi protesta sabiex anke huma jesprimu l-għadab tagħhom għall-ħakma tal-iżviluppaturi ġewwa pajjiżna. \nSe nkunu qed nagħmlu dawn it-talbiet\, li issa saru iktar urġenti minn qabel\, sabiex in-nies ma jibqgħux jibżgħu joqogħdu ġo djarhom stess: \n\nLi jieqfu l-ibbulljar u l-arroganza bla qies tal-iżviluppaturi fuq ir-residenti.\nLi l-Awtoritajiet ma jagħtux iktar permessi bl-addoċċ\, anzi jillimitaw in-numru ta’ permessi li jinħarġu kull sena.\nLi l-ħinijiet li fihom isir bini u skavar ikunu aktar ristretti u jkun limitat in-numru ta’ toroq li jingħalqu\, kif ukoll in-numru ta’ parkeġġi li jittieħdu mingħand ir-residenti.\nLi l-liġi timponi standards diċenti li jħarsu s-saħħa u s-sigurtà tar-residenti u tal-ħaddiema fuq siti tal-kostruzzjoni.\nLi jsir infurzar bis-serjetà u mingħajr eċċezzjoni tal-liġijiet li jikkontrollaw il-kostruzzjoni\, sabiex tingħata protezzjoni u dinjità lill-ħaddiema u lir-residenti.\nLi tittieħed responsabbiltà għall-dan l-isfreġju li qed isir f’pajjiżna speċjalment meta jsiru inċidenti bħal ma diġà seħħew. SUMMARY:Ports of Hope
DESCRIPTION:We feel the need to provide a space and opportunity to remember those who have lost their lives in their desperate effort to cross the Mediterranean Sea\, hoping to seek asylum\, to reach security and a better tomorrow. The horrific loss of life in the Mediterranean continues – somebody’s child\, parent\, brother\, sister\, friend\, spouse. Their lives mattered to their loved ones\, and they matter to us. Respect towards life and the innate dignity of each and every human being needs to remain central in political disputes and political discourse\, in the search of solutions for this human tragedy. \nThis ongoing tragedy must never be normalized. Death should not be an accepted side effect of seeking asylum. Europe must find solutions that honour life and not facilitate death. We know that there is no one solution\, but options for seeking asylum without loss of life must be found. \nWe will meet on Thursday evening (05.07)\, at Marsamxett Harbour\, Valletta (a little bit further up from Maori) at 1930hrs to remember those who have died\, to acknowledge those who continue to make the journey in their hope of seeking asylum in Europe\, and to send a message to those who enact deadly policies in our name: we will not turn away\, we are watching\, and we will hold you to account.

SUMMARY:Not a Minute of Silence
DESCRIPTION:The working-group “Everyday 8th March”\, which forms part of Moviment Graffitti\, is holding an evening to remember Marielle Franco\, a Brazilian black woman\, mother and human and social rights’ activist who was killed on the 14th March this year. \nThree months after her death\, we will read some of Marielle Franco’s quotes\, give some information about her life and activism\, and read a document written by her partner after her assassination. We will also discuss intersectional feminism. The initiative will then continue with some feminist music. \nMarielle Franco was born and raised in Brazil\, in Complexo da Mare\, which has 130\,000 inhabitants in 16 favelas\, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. She presented numerous projects to strengthen women’s rights\, such as those concerning the accessibility of abortion. \nAfter getting involved in politics in 2007 to coordinate the state legislature’s Committee for the Defense of Human Rights and Citizenship\, she became a counselor in the Municipal Room of Rio de Janeiro with the coalition formed by the Socialist Party and Freedom and the Brazilian Communist Party in 2016. \nMarielle was an outspoken critic of police brutality\, extrajudicial killings and violations of human rights; she denounced the problems faced by African-American women and carried out investigations into murders that took place in favelas. \n“What is it to be a woman? What has each of us already failed to do or did with some level of difficulty because of gender identity\, because of the fact of “being a woman”? The question is not rhetorical\, it is objective\, it is to reflect on the day-to-day\, on the step-by-step of all the women\, on the majority of the population\, which unfortunately is under-represented”. \n“Being a black woman is resisting and surviving all the time…” (Marielle Franco).

SUMMARY:Women's Day March 2018 - Semma' Leħnek
DESCRIPTION:On International Women’s Day\, we’ll march down Republic Street together to denounce violence against women and all forms of sexism. After the march\, around 8pm\, we”ll meet at Maori Bar (Valletta) for some drinks and music. \nViolence against women is not decreasing in numbers and usually involves family or (ex)partners\, not just a few delinquent individuals. Gender-based violence is deep-rooted\, inseparable from the reality of structural gender inequality that manifests itself in social attitudes\, gender roles and dominant discourses. \nWe see the necessity to raise our voices\, keep the fight going and build new solidarity networks with all women\, individuals and organisations that refuse to tolerate the fact that some husbands\, partners\, brothers and fathers still abuse women. \nWe are also aware of the difficulties that women in Malta face as mothers and workers. In a market where rent and property prices have spiralled out of control\, compounded by low wages and the increasing cost of living\, people like single mothers and women with abusive partners are finding it harder to build an independent living. Specific difficulties are also experienced by Trans women\, facing transphobia and financial burdens\, as well as by migrant women\, often living precarious lives due to temporary documentation and\, at times\, a hostile social environment. \nWe have to do something now if we wish that the younger generations grow up in a better Malta\, where any form of gender-based abuse will no longer form part of our lives. \nWe call onto all women\, LGBTQI persons and all individuals who feel the need to fight gender inequality to unify on 8th March and raise their voices:\nStop Violence Against Women Now!\nStop Gender-Based Violence! \nThe march is being organised by Moviment Graffitti\, Women’s Rights Foundation\, Gender Equality Malta\, Men Against Violence and Integra Foundation. It has also been endorsed by the: Department of Gender Studies\, Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM)\, aditus Foundation\, Żminijietna – Voice of the Left\, Gay-Straight Alliance MCAST (GSAM) and the Association for Equality (A4E). \nEveryone is invited to participate! \nFULL PROGRAM – International Women’s Day \n\nThu 15th Feb at 6:30pm: SCREENING OF “IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK” at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta\nTue 20th Feb at 6:00pm: KURDISTAN: A WOMEN’S REVOLUTION at the GWU Building\, South Street\, Valletta\nFri 23rd Feb at 6:00pm: WOMEN WHO FIGHT: FROM THE ITALIAN PARTISANS TO THE ROJAVA REVOLUTION at 67\, Strait Street\, Valleta\nSat 3rd Mar at 10:30am: TALK ON PATRIARCHY AND MISOGYNY at the Multipurpose Hall\, Ministry for Education and Employment\, Great Siege Road\, Floriana\nThu 8th Mar at 5:30pm: WOMEN’S DAY MARCH in Valletta\nThu 8th Mar at 8:00pm: NO FIGHT WITHOUT FESTA at Maori\, Triq il-Lanca\, Valletta\nSat 10th Mar at 6:00pm: PRESENTATION ON FEMINIST STREET ART at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta
