SUMMARY:Verses for Choice
DESCRIPTION:As a member of the coalition Voice for Choice – L-għażla tagħha\, Moviment Graffitti is organizing an Open Mic at Maori bar where verses with the theme of freedom of choice and bodily autonomy will be read. Everyone is welcome to participate by reading poems\, prose\, personal stories\, songs or any writings and thoughts on the chosen theme of the importance of deciding on our own body. Both original and not-so-original readings are welcome. \nThis event aims to give a voice to individuals who would like to share their own experiences\, thoughts and sensitivities about the importance of having the choice to decide whether or not to continue with a pregnancy. We believe that in Malta\, reproductive health and rights need to be put on the political agenda\, to be discussed critically and maturely rather than remain a taboo. Occasions to speak about them are essential to overcome the present situation. \nThe activity starts at 7.00 pm to give us time to gather and have a drink. The readings will start at around 8.00pm. There will also be some finger food to share. \nBħala membru tal-koalizjoni Voice for Choice – L-għażla tagħha\, il-Moviment Graffitti se jorganizza Open Mic il-Maori fejn se jinqraw versi bit-tema tal-libertà tal-għażla u l-awtonomija fuq ġisimna. Kulħadd mistieden biex jipparteċipa billi jaqra poeżiji\, proża\, stejjer personali\, kanzunetti jew kitbiet u ħsibijiet oħrajn dwar it-tema magħżula tal-importanza li persuna tiddeċiedi hi dwar dak li għandu x’jaqsam ma’ ġisimha. Il-kitbiet jistgħu ikunu kemm oriġinali kif ukoll mhumiex. \nL-għan ta’ din l-attività huwa li tingħata vuċi lill-individwi li jixtiequ jaqsmu l-esperjenzi\, il-ħsibijiet u s-sensittivitajiet tagħhom dwar l-importanza li persuna jkollha l-għażla li tiddeċiedi jekk tkomplix bi tqala jew le. Nemmnu li f’Malta\, is-saħħa u d-drittijiet riproduttivi jeħtieġ li jitpoġġew fuq l-aġenda politika\, biex ikunu diskussi b’mod kritiku u b’maturità minflok ma jibqgħu taboo. Okkażjonijiet biex nitkellmu fuqhom huma essenzjali biex tingħeleb is-sitwazzjoni preżenti. \nL-attività tibda fis-7.00 pm biex nilħqu ninġabru u nixorbu xiħaġa. Il-qari jibda f’xit-8.00pm. Se jkun hemm ukoll ftit ikel x’innaqqru.

SUMMARY:Screening of ‘Made in Dagenham’
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of International Women’s Day\, Moviment Graffitti invites you to the screening of the movie ‘Made in Dagehnam’\, followed by a discussion\, drinks and nibbles. \nEveryone is welcome. Free entry. \n‘Made in Dagenham’ is a 2010 British movie directed by Nigel Cole. The movie tells the true story of the Ford sewing machinists’ strike of 1968\, demanding equal pay for women. The protagonist\, a fictional character\, leads the 850 female workers of the East London plant to protest against sexual discrimination and for equal pay. The strike was successful and led to the Equal Pay Act  of 1970. \nUntil 1968\, the female machinists at Ford were classified within the company’s pay structure as grade B. That meant they were officially considered as unskilled\, despite having to pass tests in order to gain their employment. \nInternational Women’s Day – 8th March – marks women’s struggle for equality and against patriarchy. The origin of this day is rooted in Communist women’s groups in the beginning of the 20th century. Women from all around the world have fought and obtained better conditions in their lives\, on many levels. Still\, our society is rife with contradictions and inequality. Women’s work is still widely undervalued and unequal pay persists. Violence against women is a dramatic reality; in 2018\, four women were murdered in Malta by their partner or a close relative. Moreover\, we consider the present taboo on reproductive rights in Malta as undermining women’s freedom\, health and wellbeing. \nThe fight against patriarchy has to continue. \nWishing you a feminist International Women’s Day!

SUMMARY:Screening of Vera Drake
DESCRIPTION:On International Safe Abortion Day the group 8th March 365 is proposing an activity to continue to discuss and rise awareness about women’s reproductive rights. We will screen the movie Vera Drake and we will give an overview about reproductive rights worldwide. \nVera Drake is a 2004 British film written and directed by Mike Leigh. Vera is a working-class woman who performs illegal abortions in London in 1950. The director incorporates in the movie elements of his own childhood\, moreover he shows differences between working-class women and upper-class women regarding abortion when it was illegal. The movie won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. \n28th September was first celebrated as a day of action for decriminalization of abortion in Latin America and The Caribbean in 1990. In 2011\, the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) declared the 28 September as International Safe Abortion Day.

DESCRIPTION:Inizjamed flimkien mal-Moviment Graffitti se torganizza Palk Ħieles ieħor nhar il-Ħamis\, 26 ta’ Lulju fit-8:00 ġewwa l-Maori fil-belt Valletta. Għal dan il-Palk Ħieles li jaħbat is-sitta u għoxrin wieħed se jkollna tema speċjali\, “In-nisa: vuċi għolja\, vuċi qawwija”. Ma jistax jonqos għalhekk li l-mistiedna speċjali tkun il-poetessa Maria Grech Ganado\, li kienet l-ewwel mara Maltija li nħatret full-time lecturer fl-Università ta’ Malta. Maria Grech Ganado twieldet Ħal Lija fl-1943 u għandha tlett itfal. Tikteb u ppublikat kemm bil-Malti u kemm bl-Ingliż\, u rebħet il-Premju Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb diversi drabi. Għadha kif ippublikat ġabra ta’ poeżiji bl-isem ta’ “Framed” permezz ta’ Merlin Publishers. Nafu fiċ-ċert li Maria Grech Ganado ma tridx tkun weħedha u għalhekk kulħadd huwa wkoll mistieden sabiex jaqra xi poeżija\, storja\, jagħmel xi stand-up\, jgħid xi ċajta\, ikanta kanzunetta oriġinali jew jesprimi dak li jħoss fuq it-tema. For this Open Mic\, together with a co-host we also have a theme\, “Women: say it loud\, say it proud”. It is only natural that as a special guest we have the special woman Maria Grech Ganado\, the first woman to be appointed as a full-time lecturer at the University of Malta. Maria Grech Ganado was born in Ħal Lija in 1943 and is a mother of three. She writes and has published in both Maltese and English. She has won the National Book Prize more than once. Recently she has published a collection of poems called ‘Framed’ through Merlin Publishers. Maria Grech Ganado does not want to be alone\, and the stage is open for everyone. You can read a poem\, a short story\, perform a stand-up\, tell a joke\, sing an original song\, the list is endless. If you’re unsure of what to write about\, the theme can be the perfect springboard. Every language\, every dialect\, every accent is more than welcome.

SUMMARY:Not a Minute of Silence
DESCRIPTION:The working-group “Everyday 8th March”\, which forms part of Moviment Graffitti\, is holding an evening to remember Marielle Franco\, a Brazilian black woman\, mother and human and social rights’ activist who was killed on the 14th March this year. \nThree months after her death\, we will read some of Marielle Franco’s quotes\, give some information about her life and activism\, and read a document written by her partner after her assassination. We will also discuss intersectional feminism. The initiative will then continue with some feminist music. \nMarielle Franco was born and raised in Brazil\, in Complexo da Mare\, which has 130\,000 inhabitants in 16 favelas\, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. She presented numerous projects to strengthen women’s rights\, such as those concerning the accessibility of abortion. \nAfter getting involved in politics in 2007 to coordinate the state legislature’s Committee for the Defense of Human Rights and Citizenship\, she became a counselor in the Municipal Room of Rio de Janeiro with the coalition formed by the Socialist Party and Freedom and the Brazilian Communist Party in 2016. \nMarielle was an outspoken critic of police brutality\, extrajudicial killings and violations of human rights; she denounced the problems faced by African-American women and carried out investigations into murders that took place in favelas. \n“What is it to be a woman? What has each of us already failed to do or did with some level of difficulty because of gender identity\, because of the fact of “being a woman”? The question is not rhetorical\, it is objective\, it is to reflect on the day-to-day\, on the step-by-step of all the women\, on the majority of the population\, which unfortunately is under-represented”. \n“Being a black woman is resisting and surviving all the time…” (Marielle Franco).

SUMMARY:Screening of Obvious Child
DESCRIPTION:Moviment Graffitti is screening the movie ‘Obvious Child’\, a comedy-drama film written and directed by Gillian Robespierre (2014). \n‘Obvious Child’ looks at the story of Donna\, a twenty-something woman who ends up unexpectedly pregnant. She turns to her friends and family for advice\, and decides that the best decision for her is to get an abortion. The film follows Donna through the trials and tribulations of that decision. This is no tragic story\, however\, as these events are seen through Donna’s eyes\, who knows that\, ultimately\, this is the best decision for her. \nThe movie offers an unbiased look at the act of getting an abortion in the 21st century\, where it is freely accessible for women\, and all the highs and lows of life in between. \nThe film was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 17\, 2014 \nThis movie screening will be followed by some food and drinks\, as well as a short information session intended to provide some factual information about access to abortion in Malta\, compared to the rest of the world.

Queer-Feminist street-art against street harassment \nKl*aUs is a queer-feminist collective from Graz (Austria) which works on the topic of (street) harassment\, power-relations in public space and possibilities of queer-feminist interventions as a way to reclaim the streets and to fight back; a strategy of self-empowerment. \nThe workshop and talk shall be an exchange of experiences\, ideas and strategies related to issues like repression against women*\, gendered hierarchies and power relations in public spaces. \nRelated questions that can be addressed are: \n\nWhat is public space? \nTo whom does it belong and which roles does it imprint on people? \nWhich norms do I have to fulfill in order to have a place in public space? \nWhich mechanisms exclude people from public spaces? \n\nIn order to go beyond theoretical inquiry\, important issues such as solidarity\, support\, the need of feminist allies and active strategies against discriminatory practices shall be tackled. \nMoreover\, some examples of queer-feminist interventions will be presented. \nFollowed by food\, drinks and music. \nOpen to all genders. \nFULL PROGRAM – International Women’s Day \n\nThu 15th Feb at 6:30pm: SCREENING OF “IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK” at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta\nTue 20th Feb at 6:00pm: KURDISTAN: A WOMEN’S REVOLUTION at the GWU Building\, South Street\, Valletta\nFri 23rd Feb at 6:00pm: WOMEN WHO FIGHT: FROM THE ITALIAN PARTISANS TO THE ROJAVA REVOLUTION at 67\, Strait Street\, Valleta\nSat 3rd Mar at 10:30am: TALK ON PATRIARCHY AND MISOGYNY at the Multipurpose Hall\, Ministry for Education and Employment\, Great Siege Road\, Floriana\nThu 8th Mar at 5:30pm: WOMEN’S DAY MARCH in Valletta\nThu 8th Mar at 8:00pm: NO FIGHT WITHOUT FESTA at Maori\, Triq il-Lanca\, Valletta\nSat 10th Mar at 6:00pm: PRESENTATION ON FEMINIST STREET ART at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta

SUMMARY:Women's Day March 2018 - Semma' Leħnek
DESCRIPTION:On International Women’s Day\, we’ll march down Republic Street together to denounce violence against women and all forms of sexism. After the march\, around 8pm\, we”ll meet at Maori Bar (Valletta) for some drinks and music. \nViolence against women is not decreasing in numbers and usually involves family or (ex)partners\, not just a few delinquent individuals. Gender-based violence is deep-rooted\, inseparable from the reality of structural gender inequality that manifests itself in social attitudes\, gender roles and dominant discourses. \nWe see the necessity to raise our voices\, keep the fight going and build new solidarity networks with all women\, individuals and organisations that refuse to tolerate the fact that some husbands\, partners\, brothers and fathers still abuse women. \nWe are also aware of the difficulties that women in Malta face as mothers and workers. In a market where rent and property prices have spiralled out of control\, compounded by low wages and the increasing cost of living\, people like single mothers and women with abusive partners are finding it harder to build an independent living. Specific difficulties are also experienced by Trans women\, facing transphobia and financial burdens\, as well as by migrant women\, often living precarious lives due to temporary documentation and\, at times\, a hostile social environment. \nWe have to do something now if we wish that the younger generations grow up in a better Malta\, where any form of gender-based abuse will no longer form part of our lives. \nWe call onto all women\, LGBTQI persons and all individuals who feel the need to fight gender inequality to unify on 8th March and raise their voices:\nStop Violence Against Women Now!\nStop Gender-Based Violence! \nThe march is being organised by Moviment Graffitti\, Women’s Rights Foundation\, Gender Equality Malta\, Men Against Violence and Integra Foundation. It has also been endorsed by the: Department of Gender Studies\, Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM)\, aditus Foundation\, Żminijietna – Voice of the Left\, Gay-Straight Alliance MCAST (GSAM) and the Association for Equality (A4E). \nEveryone is invited to participate!

SUMMARY:Patriarchy\, Misogyny and Men
DESCRIPTION:As part of the initiatives connected to International Women’s Day 2018\, Moviment Graffitti is organizing a talk entitled “Patriarchy\, Misogyny…and men”. The talk will be delivered by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic\, from the organisation Men Against Violence \nWomen’s rights movements have experienced opposition at every step of the way\, from the moment first organised movements started forming till this very day. Each and every success story has been followed by a backlash\, with patriarchal structures closing ranks and deeply seethed misogyny swimming up to the surface and showing its real face. \nThis talk will discuss opposition to emancipation of women in general and women’s rights movement in particular\, throughout the history\, modern times and present-day. It will look at the role that misogyny plays in reinforcing the status-quo. It will also give attention to the role that men played in opposing (and supporting) women’s movements. \nUltimately\, the speaker will try to address the following questions: Considering that\, on surface level\, removing male privilege can be seen as a loss for men\, why should men support it? Isn’t it only normal that men have\, will and\, ultimately\, should oppose gender equality? How can gender equality be of benefit to men? Or put in plain terms: as men\, what’s in it for us?
