Human Rights Campaigns
Moviment Graffitti takes concrete action to protect the fundamental human rights of peoples. As such it seeks to promote the protection of human rights including the civil and political as well as the social, cultural and economic rights. It has expressed itself in favour of the liberation of the sexes, workers, different sexual orientations and ethnic minorities. It has also voiced itself against racism, fascism, xenophobia and repressive state practices. Moviment Graffitti also believes that persons should be guaranteed with basic fundamental human rights such as work, residence, free health services and education for all.
In 1995, Moviment Graffitt has voiced itself through protest regarding the amendments made to the marriage act. During the same and following year, the movement has also protested in favour of the introduction of divorce, euthanasia and the legalization of abortion in the Maltese Islands. Moviment Graffitti has often criticized excessive church interference regarding such civil rights issues and calls for more secularization between church and state.
Moviment Graffitti strongly believes that an effective work environment should incorporate the common possession of the means of production as well as more democracy at the place of work. Moviment Graffitti believes that nowadays worker's rights are in greater jeopardy through the present capitalist free trade system, which is resulting in increased unemployment as well as a demand for cheap labour. The present system with its emphasis on division of labour and specialization is also seeking the demand of unskilled cheap labour to the detriment of human kind.
As a result, Moviment Graffitti has often liaised with workers' unions in demanding global protection of workers rights. It participates regularly in May Day activities and has also taken part and organized seminars and forums on the issue. In the local context, it has expressed itself on various issues of workers' concern, including the drydocks workers, farmers and factory workers. Members of Moviment Graffitti also act as shop stewards of their work environment.
Apart from action on local issues, Moviment Graffitti has also taken various actions against violations of human rights taking place abroad. In particular it has voiced its concern regarding the oppression of Palestinian by the Israeli government. During the Palestinian Day of Action, Moviment Graffitti has focused its concerns regarding the continuous attack on Palestinians and the demolitions of their homes; the separation wall that currently is being erected by Israel across the Occupied Palestinian Territories and their handing of political prisoners.
Moviment Graffitti demands the release of all political prisoners as well as the abolition of the death penalty worldwide. Several actions were taken in front of various embassies in this regard. Moviment Graffitti has also criticized the state repression in several countries |
